Note: This curriculum document begins with the elementary years. For each year subsequent to Kindergarten students will continue to use varied media in addition to others listed for each year. Students will build on these conceptsskills and techniques, and year-end expectations in art. For the purpose of this document there is an understanding that all items in each category repeat (develop) each year. Only newly introduced medium, concepts, skills & techniques, and year-end expectations will be added per grade level.

Middle School Curriculum by Grade:

6th Grade

Concepts:

Skills & Techniques:

  • Embossing
  • Exacto blades: complex cutting and safety.
  • Tool and medium control
  • Set-up and clean-up (students’ responsibility)
  • Material management.

  • Fiber art: Adinkra
  • Mixed Media
  • Bookbinding
  • Sculpture: additive & subtractive
  • Metal tooling foil

Year End Expectations:

  • Balance: formal & informal, radial balance.
  • Unity:
  • Space: Negative & positive, silhouette.
  • Composition: emphasis/focal point.
  • Art History: concept of folk art, exposure to art movements.
  • Texture: real, implied.

 


Examples of 6th Grade projects:

Adinkra printmaking- soft-cut carving, printing on fabric.

Mexican tin art- tooling foil, texture, embossing.

Aboriginal painting- oil pastel, tempera paint, pattern, emphasis.

Mandalas- radial symmetry, color theory, colored pencils.

Abstract Expressionist painting and collage- expressive line, shape, color, composition.

Box Collage/assemblage- personal expression through sculpture: form, shape, space.

Real and Implied Texture- line quality, texture.

Expressive face mugs- coil building, face proportion, glazing.

House Book-personal expression through bookmaking: texture, line, color, shape

 

 

7th Grade


Concepts:

  • All art elements & principles of design.
  • VALUE
  • Art movement
  • Perspective
  • Color Theory
  • Self- portraiture
  • Art as self-expression
  • Drawing from nature/landscape.

 

Skills & Techniques:

  • Set-up & clean-up
  • Material management.

Medium:

  • All of the above.

 

Year End Expectations:

  • Perspective: 1-point & 2-point, linear.
  • Color Theory: Explore all color schemes and relationships.

 

Examples of 7th Grade projects:

Linear Perspective drawing: one and two point perspective: line, shape, space, texture

Patterned self-portrait: face proportions, line, pattern, texture, color

Volumetric Still life: line, shape, space

Color theory painting, color, shape, pattern

Woven Organic line print: line, color, contrast, movement fiber arts, printmaking

Favorite Color Painting: Expressionistic painting exploring line, shape, color, contrast, movement and composition

 

 

8th Grade


Concepts:

  • All art elements & principles of design.
  • Abstract metamorphosis
  • Space

Skills & Techniques:

  • Vocabulary (more advanced)

 

Medium:

  • Sculpture: additive & subtractive.
  • Ceramics: additive & subtractive
  • Drawing: contour, value
  • Printmaking: subtractive
  • Fiber arts

Year End Expectations:

  • Space: positive & negative
  • Abstract: representational, non-representational.

2-D Art:

Metamorphosis drawing: line, value, shape, space, contrast.

Romare Beardon collage: composition, texture, space, shape, color, line, emphasis, unity.

Quilt square print: pattern, color, line, shape, space

Sneaker Watercolor Painting: line, shape, color, composition, emphasis, unity, balance, movement.

 

Sculpture:

Wire sculpture: line, shape, form, space, balance, movement, emphasis

Papier-mâché sculpture: shape, color, form, space, balance, unity, harmony, emphasis

Cardboard box sculpture: shape, form, line, texture, pattern, composition

 

Ceramics:
