     James River Day School Violin

Students, remember to bring your violins to school each week for class!

       4th Grade ~ Tuesdays 8:30-9:15am

       Ms. Glass' 3rd Grade ~ Wednesdays 8:30-9:15am

       Mrs. Fielding's 3rd Grade ~ Wednesdays 10:45-11:30am

Students in 4th grade are responsible for renting their own instruments.  I recommend Salisbury and Heer Stringed Instruments at 386-1885.

 Care of the violin:

You may safely hold the violin by the neck, in rest position under your right arm with the strings facing away from your side (make sure you can see the bridge) or on the violin’s shoulder in order to bring it from rest position to playing position.

Always place the case on its bottom (silver studs) with the handle toward you before opening.

Always use the Velcro straps to secure the neck of the violin when you put it back into the case.  The shoulder rest must be removed before the case can be closed.

Care of the bow:

Do not touch the bow hair.  The natural oils from our skin will make it too slippery to make a good sound.

Rosin your bow when needed to help it draw out a big sound.

Hold the bow by the frog.  (You may hold the stick with your left hand as you work on making your best bow hold with your right hand.)

Remember to tighten the hair of the bow before playing each time.  You must then loosen the bow hair before putting it away.  Make sure not to tighten too much.  The distance between the hair and the stick at its smallest point should be approximately the width of a pencil or your pinky.

General Information:

  • Students should leave their instruments in the hallway outside their classrooms where I will tune them before each class.  Students should not try to move the pegs themselves.  They require that one pushes into the peg box quite firmly at the same time as turning.
  • Loose bow hairs are common and easily fixed (These can be removed by wrapping the hair around your finger and pulling swiftly and firmly away from the middle and past whichever end of the bow the hair is still attached to.  I can clip off any spiky remnants in class with nail clippers if necessary.)
