1925 - A Tennessee court indicted biology teacher John Scopes on charges of teaching Darwinism in a public high school.  The subsequent court case would allow for the teaching of such a theory acceptable - in some parts of the country.  It was part of a ideological debate in the U.S., at the time, between science and fundamentalism.

1895 - A London court convicted Oscar Wilde on charges of immorality and sentenced him to jail.

1935 - New York Yankee Babe Ruth hit his last home run, number 714, and that record would stand until broken in 1974 by Atlanta Brave Henry Aaron.

1946 - Jordan gained its independence from Britain.

1968 - The Gateway Arch in St. Louis, Missouri was officially dedicated and open to the public.

1986 - Roughly 7m Americans participated in "Hands Across America" to bring attention to homelessness and hunger.

1996 - Christina Sanchez of France became the first woman to achieve the rank of matador in Europe.
