1900 - American (from Harvard University) and British collegiate tennis players competed for the first Davis Cup challenge.  The Americans won.

1825 - The U.S. House of Representatives was forced to decide the 1824 election between John Quincy Adams, the ultimate winner, and Andrew Jackson.  Under the charge of a "corrupt bargain," Jackson would win four years later.

1942 - The U.S. Congress pushed through a measure to create daylight savings time.

1950 - Sen. Joseph McCarthy, in a speech in Wheeling, West Virginia, declared he had a list of 205 names of communists in the U.S. State Department.

1961 - The Beatles played their first gig; a lunchtime set that earned them only three pounds.

1965 - The Johnson administration sent the first American combat troops into South Viet Nam after years of sending advisors and trainers.

1971 - Leroy "Satchel" Paige was the first Negro League veteran to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.

2001 - The submarine USS Greenville collided with a Japanese fishing boat in Pearl Harbor, killing nine people.
