SOCIAL STUDIES 11
UNITED STATES HISTORY, GOVERNMENT, AND GEOGRAPHY
COURSE OBJECTIVES AND GRADING POLICY

U.S HISTORY, GOVERNMENT AND GEOGRAPHY IS A REGENT’S REQUIREMENT FOR GRADUATION. EVERYONE TAKING THIS COURSE MUST PASS A REGENT’S EXAMINATION IN JUNE. THE PASSING GRADE IS 65 ON THE REGENT’S EXAM.

OBJECTIVES

1) To achieve an in-depth knowledge of the major ideas, eras, themes, developments, people, politics, turning points and events in American History, Government, and Geography, from the foundations of the republic to modern times.

2) To learn organizational skills like long term retention, notebook assembly, note taking techniques, study skills and strategies, and meeting deadlines.

3) To practice methodology to improve writing, thinking, and testing skills.

4) To use a variety of teaching techniques to make U.S. History, Government, and Geography come to life. To attempt to reach the different learning styles present in each class so everyone has an equal opportunity to learn and be successful.

5) To analyze and evaluate historical information using social studies knowledge as evidence of a mature understanding of the American experience.

6) To discuss and interpret current events to help form open-minded informed judgments about the world around us.

GRADING POLICY

Your course grade for each marking period is determined by the value of the categories as follows:

TESTS AND QUIZZES 40%

HOME WORK 20%

CLASS PROJECTS 30%

NOTEBOOK 10%

Your final average will be the average of 4 marking period grades plus the Regent's  exam. In other words, the Regent's exam is worth 20% of your final report card grade.

MAKE UP POLICY

If you are absent you will have two days
from the date of your return to make up overdue work.

If work is not handed in when collected, you immediately lose 10 points from your grade. If you are late with work for any other reason, each day late is an additional 10 points off your score. After 4 days, your grade will be a 0 for that work.

ENRICHMENT WORK

Any extra credit or enrichment projects assigned by the teacher will add points to your marking period average based on the point value in the enrichment binder. You must complete the work as assigned and not simply dash off something poorly done in order to receive credit.

The maximum additional points per marking period is 5. Also, no enrichment or extra credit work will be accepted unless the student has a passing average. Enrichment and extra credit are just that and are not to be used to escape the rigors of the regular classroom assignments.
