Third Grade Writing

CONTENT – Means making your writing easy for a reader to understand.  You are writing what you have been asked to write about. 

 

ORGANIZATION – Your writing has a topic sentence and includes simple supporting facts and details.  It is easy for the reader to follow and understand.

 

STYLE - Your thoughts and feelings come through.  You are communicating to the correct audience.  Your writing is energized and keeps the reader’s interest.

 

CONVENTIONS –You follow the rules that writers follow to make writing meaningful.  Most words are spelled correctly and all commonly used 3rd grade words should be spelled correctly.  You should be using correct punctuation, grammar and capitalization.

 

1st Trimester – Friendly Letter

We can write proper personal and formal letters, thank-you notes, and invitations that state a purpose, and that include the date, proper salutation,

body, closing, and signature.

 

State Standard - Writing: Writing Applications Genres and their characteristics

W2.3 Write personal and formal letters, thank-you notes, and invitations:

a. Show awareness of the knowledge and interests of the audience and establish a purpose and context. b. Include the date, proper salutation, body, closing, and signature.

 

2nd Trimester –  Personal Narrative

We can write a story that includes a context for the plot, details that develop the plot,

and reasons why the story is worth writing about.

 

State Standard - Writing: Writing Applications Genres and their characteristics

W2.1 Write narratives:

a. Provide a context within which an action takes place.

b. Include well-chosen details to develop the plot.

c. Provide insight into why the selected incident is memorable.

 

3rd Trimester –  Descriptive

We can write descriptions that include sensory details to support impressions of people, places, things, or experiences.

and support unified impressions of people, places, things, or experiences.
