IB Assessment - IB Math Studies
All IB Diploma courses include summative assessments that measure what students know and can do. One of these is internal, meaning that it is set, delivered, and marked by the instructor. The other is external, meaning that the student's work is forwarded to an IB examiner for marking. Students enrolled in IB Math Studies SL must complete two such assessments for the IB:
The project is submitted and marked by the instructor and is valued at 20 total possible points. Then, a sample is chosen and sent to be moderated. This moderated grade (if it is indeed moderated) is worth 20% of the IB score for the course. Paper 1 is a 15-question exam given in a controlled setting in May. Students are given an hour and a half to complete the exam and then the exams are sent to be scored. The ultimate scaled score becomes 30% of the student's IB grade. Paper 2 is a 5-question exam with many scaffolded questions. It is also given on a separate day in a controlled setting in May. Students have an hour and a half to complete the exam and then the exams are sent to be scored. The ultimate scaled score becomes 50% of the student's IB grade. Once the three components have been assessed the student is assigned a score level for the course from 1(very poorly qualified) to 7(very highly qualified).
