Welcome to the Home of the Spring Valley High School Speech and Debate Team

For the past three years, I have been privileged to direct the forensics program at Spring Valley High School.  Our team has enjoyed a great deal of success at speech and debate tournaments in the Las Vegas area, earning first-place honors at the county, state, and district levels of competition.  Last year alone, our team won 93 awards during the 2008/09 season, an impressive record for a fledgling team.

This summer I traveled to Birmingham, Alabama for the 2009 National Forensic League Championship Tournament.  The experience once again reminded me why forensics is one of the best activities a student can do in high school and how it can be such a positive influence in the growth of an individual.  For those who may be unfamiliar with forensics, competitive speech and debate, I can’t sing its praises enough.  The National Forensic League, the governing body of all speech and debate programs across the country, has been a stalwart leadership organization for young people since 1925.  Students who have benefitted from a forensic education have gone on to become presidents, congressmen, judges, leaders in business, broadcasting, and entertainment.  Forensics serves as an agent of change, opening students up to new avenues of thought while building self-confidence and strength of integrity.  I strongly believe that students who participate in speech and debate, taking advantage of all it affords, will find themselves well ahead of their peers in college, fully prepared for the thoughtful and rigorous level of discourse the university demands.  But more importantly, they will enter college knowing that the content of any class pales to the content of one’s character.

I have been fortunate to work with an administration that values and supports the activity of forensics, providing financially whenever it can afford to do so.  However, fundraising has been, and always will be, a staple of any growing high school program.

On December 4th and 5th  we will host the 2009 Spring Valley High School Speech and Debate Invitational, a forensic tournament that will welcome 300 students from all over the Clark County School District.   During the tournament, all judges will receive a small tournament program that provides a map to the entire campus, descriptions of all the events offered, and judging guidelines.  Should your business decide to sponsor our team, you will receive an advertisement in our tournament program that will be distributed to all our judges and volunteers on December 4th and 5th.  The level of sponsorship will determine the size of the ad, and the money received from your sponsorship will help our program to . . .
