A Message from Mr. Sevano . . . I would like to welcome back all students and parents to another school year and another speech and debate season. This summer I traveled to Birmingham, Alabama for the 2009 National Forensic League Championship Tournament. The experience once again reminded me why forensics is one of the best activities a student can do in high school and how it can be such a positive influence in the growth of an individual. For those of you who may be unfamiliar with forensics, competitive speech and debate, I can’t sing its praises enough. The National Forensic League, the governing body of all speech and debate programs across the country, has been a stalwart leadership organization for young people since 1925. Students who have benefitted from a forensic education have gone on to become presidents, congressmen, judges, leaders in business, broadcasting, and entertainment. Forensics serves as an agent of change, opening students up to new avenues of thought while building self-confidence and strength of integrity. I strongly believe that students who participate in speech and debate, taking advantage of all it affords, will find themselves well ahead of their peers in college, fully prepared for the thoughtful and rigorous level of discourse the university demands. But more importantly, they will enter college knowing that the content of any class pales to the content of one’s character. I look forward to beginning another year at Spring Valley High School with such remarkable young men and women. Sincerely, Mr. Nicholas Sevano *** Spring Valley's Speech and Debate Team Honored! Congratulations! The Spring Valley HS speech and debate program has earned significant recognition by the National Forensic League. Because your chapter achieved 100 degrees or more last year, it placed in the top 10% of NFL chapters nationwide and qualified for the NFL “100 Club.” This award is important because it demonstrates your program’s commitment to teaching essential life skills – communication, research, listening, writing, and organization – to a large number of students. NFL commends your leadership of an active forensics program. The attainment of 100 degrees is and outstanding accomplishment. NFL is proud of the Spring Valley HS chapter.
