Literacy : The Daily 5 Literacy and The Daily 5
For our English Language Arts (ELA) instruction, we use Scott Foresman Reading Street for Spelling, Phonics, Grammar and Comprehension skills and strategies.  We will also utilize the leveled readers in this series.  We do not use a traditional basal series (the big reading boooks that expect everyone to read the same story every week.)

In our classroom, we utilize The Daily 5 as our literacy framework.  We will spend a good deal of time during the first month of school learning and practicing five essential reading and writing tasks.  These tasks will be performed independently during small group or individual conference times, while the teacher is working with small numbers of students.  The key to reading and writing success is practice and these five activities provide daily essential practice in these area.  The five areas of The Daily 5 are:
  • Read to Self - students read independently and uninterrupted during this time.  they may find a comfportable spot in the room in which to do so.
  • Read With Someone - students may read in pairs.  They read to each other in a quiet tone so as not to disturb other students.
  • Listen to Reading - Students listen to audio of favorite books.
  • Word Work - Students engage in varying acitivites that provide practice for Spelling or vocabulary words.
  • Work on Writing - Students have several options for writing.  They may select a writing "assignment",  or they may choose to compose a piece from one of several different writing genres that have been introduced.
The key to success in utilizing The Daily 5 is independent work capability.  This requires respect and discipline.  Without these, our classroom cannot function optimally.  Therefore, I will require a workable level of both respect and self-discilpine.  For students who have not previously engaged in The Daily 5, this can take some time to establish.   I have no doubt that we will have The Daily 5 up and running soon!
