Study of Jonah and Bemidbar Welcome to our Tanach class for this year. We will study the books of Jonah and Numbers, asking these questions: 1. What is repentance and why is it so difficult? 2. Why do we read Jonah on Yom Kippur? 3. What do we learn about G-d, Moshe and the Children of Israel from the desert experience? 4. Why do we learn the book of Numbers in 6th grade? 5. How can “text decoding” better our understanding of Tanakh? Goals for You: Content: We will learn Jonah and Numbers. You will carry away an appreciation for the gift of repentance. You will learn lessons of the desert experience. Skills: You will develop your ability to read, translate and analyze verses. You will also work on your ability to read and discuss commentary. Values: You will strive to improve your relationships with people and with G-d. You will gain an understanding for the impact you have in the world. How you will do this: 1. Classroom Preparation: Bring every day: JPS Tanach (whenever I tell you) Properly organized binder Pen/pencil
2. Behavior: Actively participate to the best of your ability. Show respect for yourself, your classmates, your teacher and the subject matter. 3. Do your work: You will have regular assignments. Do your work in full and on time. You will have quizzes and one larger assignment or test per unit 4. Grading: Participation in discussion and partner learning 25% Homework 25% Binder 5% Quizzes 10% Projects 15% Tests 20% Help: You are the person who determines how well you will do. I expect you to ask for help when you need some. Make an appointment to meet with me or come to my office hours Monday 12:45-1:35.
