The American Association of School Librarians (AASL) and the Association for Educational Communication and Technology (AECT) jointly developed nine information literacy standards to be the basis of school library media center instruction. These standards were developed to serve as a support for the entire curriculum.
The nine standards as found in Library Power are as follows:
The student who is information literate:
Accesses information efficiently and effectively
Evaluates information critically and competently
Uses information accurately and creatively
Pursues information related to personal interests
Appreciates literature and other creative expression of information (including multimedia)
Strives for excellence in information seeking and knowledge generation
Recognizes the importance of information to a democratic society
Practices ethical behavior in regard to information and information technology
Participates effectively in groups to pursue and generate information
