Greetings students and families! Welcome to our own classroom web page
May 24, 2012 Did you know? We write extensively in our classroom. This may look different from 4th grade because of the fourth grade focus on writing based on the standards for the MSP test. Our writing is imbedded in the curriculum. I hope you enjoyed looking and reading your child's newspaper articles. They write 1-2 nearly every day. We have worked on 4 different types of book reports and will have another one written in the next 2 weeks.
We have written several letters to people of interest (based on our classroom learning) and used persuasive and informative techniques in the process.
All writing includes the planning process for writing: brainstorming, prewriting, draft, revision and editing, final draft, and publishing.
Within the science curriculum the children need to learn to write based on the scientific process. It is especially important for them to learn to write a hypothesis, prediction, summary and a conclusion based on the results of their experiments.
We are currently working on our Classroom Civics Based Assessment writing, using our interviews and research during our study of nutrition. We hope you had a chance to look at all the research, writing, and diagramming we did and then posted on the hallway bulletin board! We were so proud of it!
The children also wrote their own scripts for the film we created and will be producing by the end of the year based on the nutrition research and investigations.
We wrote extensive interview questions for Mr. Paul Flock who visited our classroom to talk about district nutrition guidelines.
Each day the children are expected to have written about their current literature circle book in addition to digging out the vocabulary to study with one another. Our current book is "My Brother Sam is Dead" and we will be writing another book report using our reading of this text.
Look for a biography to appear in your child's historical newspaper before the end of the year. We have been studying several important figures that shaped our nation.
Any questions? Please ask. All curriculum and teaching is based on the 5th grade standards as stated in the OSPI generated expectations.
Hey! We are doing ALGEBRA! What fun! We will also study measurement, in further depth, before the end of the year.
F.L.A.S.H. permission letter will come home today or tomorrow for permission for your child to go through the Family Live and Sexual Health. This is a unit about the health and body of children going through puberty. It is not a unit that teaches about the 'sexual process'.
Civil War has begun! Crazy activities to ensue! Ask each day about what happened on the front line.
We look forward to studying the Civil War, a middle school field trip, tent read-in and our end of the year field trip. More info will come home soon.
New literature circles have begun with "My Brother Sam is Dead". The kids will need to keep up with their reading and writing assignment each day. Time is given in class, but if they do not finish each assignment they must take the work home to complete.
DID YOU KNOW? The school lunch menu for June 7 was developed by our class! We are very proud and excited to have come up with such a great menu!
The annual parent survey has been posted on our district web site as well as our school web site and will remain open until Friday, June 1st. Please take a few minutes to complete the survey. The results will be used for school improvement planning. Thank-you.
Please refer to your child's planner for current homework if the website is not updated.
MATH Be sure to look through your child's math spiral. This is where all our daily work is kept and any notes are taken. You will see how much your child is learning in the areas of fractions and decimals. We also do a 6th grade Math Minute each day. This worksheet explores algebra and other concepts we are studying in class. These come home every couple of days.
I will attempt to keep this web page updated 1-2 times each week. Please check your child's planner or write a note in it if you do not see what you are looking for.
STILL NEEDED: Clorox wipes to clean our desks. They are often offered on coupon sale at Costco. We are also in need of paper towels and cans of shaving cream for cleaning our desks the fun way!
Thanks for your assistance! We all appreciate it!
All the best!
Karen Miller
P.S. Be sure to check the homework portion of this website.
