5th Grade Web Page Miller MILLER CENTRAL NEWS AND INFORMATION
Mrs. Miller's 5th Grade Classroom

Greetings students and families!
Welcome to our own classroom web page

February 09, 2012
STUDY ISLAND has begun!  Please be sure your child is completing their assignments each week.  There will be 2 assignments per week, one in math and one in reading.
The first one was assigned today and is due on the 10th.  The next will be due on the 17th.  Look for the new assignment to be activated on Friday evening.

VALENTINE’S DAY

Please do not send in candy for Valentine's Day.  We are studying nutrition and are learning how bad sugar can be for us in such quantity.  PLEASE think about an alternative to candy.  How about sending in pencils, granola bars, fruit snacks, sugarless candy, or sunflower seeds (we do have one diabetic).  The kids are so interested in studying nutrition that it seems an oxymoron to go against all we have been talking about in class.  I appreciate your support.  This is also in line with our Olympia School District nutritional guidelines

With this, we will all be making healthy snacks to enjoy during our Valentine Party.  We will make things like kale chips, banana bread, smoothies, spring rolls and will have carrots and dip.  With this we will still feel like it is a party without all the effects of white sugar.

Here are all the names of the students in our class for Valentines:

Please refer to your child's planner for current homework if the website is not updated.

MATH
Be sure to look through your child's math spiral.  This is where all our daily work is kept and any notes are taken.  You will see how much your child is learning in the areas of fractions and decimals.  We also do a 6th grade Math Minute each day.  This worksheet explores algebra and other concepts we are studying in class.  These come home every couple of days.

KNITTING NEWS update:
Several kids are now making fingerless mittens or hand warmers!  They have ruffles at the wrist and are so cute!  Can you knit with 4 needles at once?  They can!
It is never too late to join knitting club.  Come five days or 2 it is up to you!

A few of the kids are beginning their second hat in which they will learn ribbing of knit 2, purl 2.
Thank you so much for supporting your child's new hobby.  Knitting is so very good for our minds and the building of mathematical and reading skills.
Social skills are also built during our time around the tables. Some will need to purchase new needles and yarn as they pick out and begin new projects.  Please look at Canvas Works for any new yarn and supplies.  They are located downtown, just one block toward the lake from Starbucks.  They are very reasonably priced for the yarn your children will be knitting with.  Expect to spend between $6 - 9 per skein for GOOD yarn that is the correct weight for their patterns.  They also carry all the needles anyone will need for any project and will be priced from $6.50 on up depending on what you choose.  I have worked with Nancy, Amy, and Pam for years and they understand all of our knitting club needs.  Take your pattern with you for help!

I have purchased new yarn, at a great price for the kids, to purchase if they wish.  The cost for one skein of great yarn is $5.48 to be paid directly to Mrs. Miller.  I purchased the yarn at Weaving Works in Seattle and am charging the kids my direct cost.  I don't have much so when it is gone it is gone!
I also have some Sugar and Cream for dishcloths for $1.36 each - again at my cost.

I will attempt to keep this web page updated 1-2 times each week.  Please check your child's planner or write a note in it if you do not see what you are looking for.

STILL NEEDED:
Clorox wipes to clean our desks.  They are often offered on coupon sale at Costco.

Thanks for your assistance!  We all appreciate it!

All the best!

Karen Miller

P.S.  Be sure to check the homework portion of this website.
