Everything you need to know about Kindergarten from A-Z

A-Attendance

If your child is absent, please call the elementary office (686-9492) and let them know that he/she will not be in school.  The office will also need a note upon your child’s return stating the reason for his/her absence.  If your child will be out for a long period of time and you would like to pick up the work that he/she has missed, please leave a message with the elementary office and we will pull it together for you to pick up at the end of the day.

B – Bus and Birthdays

Riding the bus is a big adjustment for kindergarten students.  It is best to keep their pick-up and drop-off locations as consistent as possible.  Please help your child learn their bus number – both on the way to school and on the way home.  Your child will need a bus pass if they will be riding a bus that is not their regular bus.  This must come in writing from you.  You may send a note with the bus change with your child to school, and we will make sure they receive a bus pass.

We love to celebrate birthdays in our classroom!  If your child has a birthday, you are welcome to send in a special birthday snack to share with the class.  Please let us know ahead of time if you would like to do this, as we have food allergies in the classroom.

If your child is having a birthday party, please do not allow them to bring invitations to school to pass out unless they have one for every child in the class.  This eliminates unnecessary hurt feelings.  I will be sending home a class directory that you may use to mail birthday party invitations to your child’s friends.

C – Clothes

We spend a lot of our time on the floor in kindergarten and we often work with paint, glue, makers and anything else that is messy!  The children do wear smocks to paint, but nothing covers them from head to toe.

Please make sure that your child has an extra change of clothes in his/her cubby to keep on hand.  It is also helpful for you to label all of the items before sending them in (a large zip-lock bag works great.)

Remember that sneakers are a must for PE days!

D – Dues for Weekly Reader

As part of our kindergarten curriculum, we will be using the Scholastic Magazine.  This is a magazine designed for kids that covers current events and seasonal topics.  We will send home more information regarding this magazine after the school year begins.

E – Emergency Information

You will be receiving an information card a few days after school starts.  Please fill out this card and return it to school so that we may keep updated on any changes with your address or phone number.  It is so important that we always have a number where an adult can be reached.  This card also lets us know who has permission to pick up your child from school.

F – Field Trips and Fundraisers

Field trips are such an important part of learning.  We are hoping to take a couple of field trips this year.  We will hold a fundraiser during the year to help cover the cost of these field trips.  We will let you know more about the field trips when the time comes.

G – Gym

Please see our class schedule for PE days.  Your child must wear sneakers in order to participate in PE class.  If it is easier, you are welcome to leave a pair of sneakers in your child’s cubby.

H – Homework

Your child will be given monthly homework assignments beginning in October.  These will be fun, age-appropriate activities that every child can be successful at and enjoy doing.

I – Informed

We will do our best to keep you informed on what is happening in the classroom and on upcoming events and activities.  We try to send home a newsletter every Friday giving you an overview of the week.  We will also include a weekly behavior log.

In addition to this, we will give each child a notebook to be used as a parent communication tool.  Please feel free to send us a note in the notebook.  We will check all of the notebooks in the morning and write back during the day.  Please make sure that you check the notebook after school for any notes from us, and then put it back in your child’s backpack for the following day.

J – “Junk” in the Backpacks

Your child needs room in his/her backpack for their folder, library books, and other goodies that we make throughout the day.  Please check your child’s backpack daily for any items that can be removed to create more room.  This will also make it “less heavy” for them to carry.

K – Kindergarten Student of the Week

Each child will have the opportunity to be our “Star” of the week.  Your child will bring home a special star of the week poster to fill out, as well as a special bag of books to borrow for the week.  You will receive more information regarding the “Star” of the week when it is your child’s turn.

L – Library and Lunch

Please see our class schedule for our library day.  Each week your child will be able to borrow a book from the library.  Your child must return this book the following week in order to borrow a new one.  Please help your child learn how to take care of library books and teach them to keep their book in a safe place where it won’t get lost.

M – Money

When you need to send money to school with your child, please send it in an envelope.   Write your child’s name on the outside along with an explanation of what the money is for.

N – Notes and Nurse

Please use the communication notebook to send us any notes.  We will check it every morning.  You are also welcome to write bus passes in there and we will take care of them.

Mrs. McGuire is our elementary nurse.  You will need to discuss any medications that your child needs with her.  Please do not send your child to school with any medication in his/her backpack.

O – Office

Mrs. Nash and Mrs. Trottier are wonderful assets to our school.  They are available to answer any questions that you may have.  Mr. Patrick Dailey, the elementary principal, and Mrs. Amy Netti, the assistant principal, are also available and eager to meet all of you.

P – PTA

The PTA is active and always looking for new recruits.  They provide many activities and programs for the children in our school.  Please consider joining!  You may determine your level of involvement in the PTA from volunteering often or simply paying a $5.00 membership fee.

Q – Questions

Please do not hesitate to call us at school or at home.  We will be happy to answer any questions or discuss any concerns that you may have.  You can usually find us in our classroom before school starts, so feel free to stop by or give us a call.

R – Reading Program

We will be using a variety of reading materials throughout the year to help your child develop early literacy skills and to begin reading.  We will use leveled books as well as books from the Houghton Mifflin reading series.

S – Snack

Please make sure that your child has a snack everyday.  We will have snack every afternoon.  Due to food allergies, our classroom will be a peanut free zone.  So please do not send in snacks with peanut butter or nuts. White or chocolate milk may be purchased at this time.  Please see the cafeteria/menu information for more milk ticket pricing and information.

T – Toys

Please have your child keep his/her toys at home.  We have many games and fun toys at school that your child will be able to play with.

U – Understanding

If your child is having difficulty understanding a concept or skill that we have been working on in school, we will let you know so that you may help your child at home.  Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns with anything your child is learning at school.

V – Volunteers

There will be several times throughout the year where we will need volunteers.  This may be for a field trip, a special project or for a holiday party that we may be having.  We will also need guest readers!  More information will follow.

W – Winter

Winter is especially hard for kindergarten.  We go outside everyday unless it is raining or if the temperatures are dangerously cold.  Our belief is that fresh air does great things for all of us!  Boots, hats, mittens and warm coats are necessary.  Your child will only be able to enjoy this outside time if they are properly dressed for the weather.  Don’t forget to label every article of clothing – it’s amazing how many stray mittens we find at the end of the day!

X – Extra Clothes

Please send in an extra set of clothes to be kept in your child’s cubby, just in case!  These clothes should be labeled and kept in a bag in your child’s cubby.

Y – Yes, I will try!

These are the words that we like to hear our students say in kindergarten!

Z – Zest

Kindergarten is a busy place!  Your child needs lots of energy!  A good night sleep and breakfast are important ingredients in the recipe for kindergarten success!
