The Civil War:1/2 year course that will discuss the institution of slavery as it existed in America before the Civil War of 1861-1865. Additionally, the class will discuss how the practice of slavery galvanized positions on all sides of the issue. Class will approach the Civil War from various points of view; to include, economic, military, social, religious, moral, and racial perspectives and comparing these points of view to those that existed in antebellum America. Class will utilize film (Glory, Gettysburg, Gods & Generals), short story (An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge), and novel (Cold Mountain) to present these various approaches to the period. Course will require reading of a full-length novel and active participation in class discussions. The class will discuss the period candidly; while a vitally important era in our history, the subject of the Civil War in general, and of race in particular, requires that it be presented and discussed honestly in an academic format. Visual, literary and oral descriptions of the era might be considered offensive yet remain important topics to be discussed. Class is open to honor-roll level students in grades 9-12.
