Suggestions for Reading at Home

Sight Words

• Word Hunt – Put sight words around the house and have your child find and read the word
• Rainbow Words – Have your child trace the words several times in different colors
• Word Find – Have your child find different words on a page of text
• Flashcards
• Making words with play-doh
• Writing words in shaving cream

Reading

• Read at home every night
• Ask questions while reading with your child
• Make connections to the story (Connections to your child, other texts, their environment, movies)
• Read a variety of materials: comic books, magazines, fiction, non-fiction, lists, signs, food boxes
