Welcome Students and Parents
What is Discovery? |
|
Discovery is an interdisciplinary program for students in third through fifth grades who need more instruction using higher level thinking abilities. Students meet with their Discovery teacher twice a week to study units of study that stress problem solving and higher level thinking. Students are identified for the Discovery Program by using multiple criteria. Standardized test scores including the Cognitive Abilities Test and the Iowa Basic Achievement Test are analyzed. A checklist of behaviors is completed by the classroom teacher. Evaluation of the criteria is completed and inclusion in the Discovery Program is determined. Parents will receive a letter mid to late September to invite students into the program.
Cluster/Enrichment Groups are determined in the area of math or language arts for students in grades one through grade five as needed. A cluster group means that a student's curriculum may be compacted or accelerated. The student's cluster group may meet with the Discovery teacher or classroom teacher in the classroom. The student's work may vary from the standard curriculum.
An enrichment group means that a student participates in the standard curriculum with enrichment in lieu of standard work when necessary. Enrichment needs will be determined by classroom teacher in collaboration with the Discovery teacher.
