The Last Dragon

The Last Dragon by Susan Miho Nunes

Summary:  Peter Chang's parents send him to Chinatown to spend the summer with his great aunt.  In one of the stores, Peter finds a dusty old dragon, and begins to restore it to its original beauty.  In the process, he makes new friends and learns new things.

Genre: Realistic Fiction

Realistic Fiction is a fictional story in which the setting, plot, dialogue, and characters seem real.

Story Skill: Identify and Explain the Elements of the Plot

A plot is the action or series of events in a story.  We will be focusing on the parts of a plot.  Exposition (beginning of the text) is the background about the characters and an explanation of the characters situation.  This situation creates a story problem of conflict.  Rising action is a problem or conflict that arises which the characters try to solve.  The tension in the story builds or the conflict deepens.  The climax is the deepening of the conflict where it reaches a critical point.  The tension reaches a peak.  Falling action is the part of the story where the conflict begins to be settled and the tension decreases.  Finally, the resolution is how the problem or conflict is solved.  The story ends.
