Shores of Silver Lake

By the Shores of Silver Lake by Laura Ingalls Wilder

 Summary: Mrs. Ingalls and her four daughters are taking their first train trip.  They are leaving their farm and heading west to meet Mr. Ingalls and settle on their new homestead.  Laura, the second oldest, spends much of the journey describing the train, countryside, and other passengers to Mary, the oldest child.  Mary lost her sight after being very sick with scarlet fever.

 

Genre: Historical Fiction

Historical fiction is a story that is based on events that actually took place or people who actually lived in the past.

Story Skill:  Character Traits

A character trait is a special quality a character has.  It is not a feeling.  A character trait can be identified by paying attention to what characters say, do, think, and what other characters or narrators say.  A character can have more than one trait. 

Examples of character traits are: caring, cruel, timid, agressive, honest, etc.
