Grandfather's Journey

Grandfather's Journey by Allen Say

Summary:  The author and narrator, Allen Say, tells about the journey his grandfather made to America.  Mr. Say shares what his grandfather experienced and how his grandfather felt about leaving his homeland.

Genre: Narrative Text

A narrative text is a story based on personal experience.  The author's life mirrors that of his grandfather in this story.

Story Skill: Author's Opinion

When trying to identify an author's opinion first we must be able to distinguish between opinions and facts.  An opinion is what a person thinks or believes, while a fact is a statement that can be proven.  We can learn about an author's opinion through the author's words, thoughts, feelings, and actions while he narrates his story.
