Step #1: The STAR Test
The students are given a computerized STAR test several times each school year to determine their "just right" reading level. This score provides a range of numbers for the child to use when selecting books to read, for example 2.5 - 3.9. The goal of this program is to help the students find books that are not too hard, not too easy - but "just right" for their reading level.
Step #2: Selecting a Reading Book
All of the AR books in our library have red dots on the spine of the book. This dot has the reading level written on it and helps the students find a book in their "just right" reading range.
Step # 3: Taking an AR Test
When the student has finished reading the book, they access the AR program on a computer in the classroom, library or computer lab and take a comprehension test about that book. Immediately after the test is finished, a score will appear on the screen and will offer the student the chance to see the answers of any questions they may have answered incorrectly. Points will also be awarded for the test based on the difficulty and length of the book and for how many questions were answered correctly.
