November 9, 2011 November 9, 2011

Greetings- This week, there are a few key informational pieces. Please read items 1 and 2 extra carefully!

  1. Attached is a just released Informational Brief on the Impact of School Libraries on Student Achievement. This report was commissioned by NYSED Educational Design and Technology Team, in cooperation with New York State Deputy Commissioner Jeffery Cannell. Please do take the time to read it! The full brief can be found at: http://nycomprehensivecenter.org/initiatives/inits_elearn/resources. The report is framed around the goals of the Board of Regents Reform Agenda; it hasn’t been presented to the Board yet, but conversations by NYSED are underway as to the best way to proceed. Feel free to pass this brief on.
  2. On November 29, the New York State Assembly is holding a hearing around Library System Funding (this would include the Monroe 2 BOCES SLS, Monroe County Public Library System, and RRLC). The Assembly is looking to cut funding from library systems across the state. Note- the hearing notice does state Public Library Systems, but it is actually all types of systems. Can you please take a moment and visit http://www.assembly.state.ny.us/comm/Library/20111028/. On this site is a form that you can fill out and send to the Assembly. Please let the Assembly know what type of impact a library system has had on you, your students, and your ability to teach your students. If you have questions on this, please let me know.
  3. Noodle Tools is an online citation creation program designed for students to use when doing a research project (http://noodletools.com/). If all secondary schools in a district purchase this product, then the elementary schools can have it for free. To-date, the following schools have purchased this product via the Online Database CoSER: Hilton High School, Hilton Merton Williams, Wheatland-Chili Jr/Sr High, Brockport Oliver Middle School, Churchville-Chili Secondary Campus, Holley, Greece Arcadia, Greece Athena, Greece Odyssey. As a result, any elementary schools in Hilton, Wheatland-Chili, Holley or Churchville-Chili are eligible for this product for free. If you are interested in this, please contact Patti Rose (prose@monroe2boces.org).
  4. Reminder, please fill out the Doodle Poll for the Sylvan Dell eBooks: http://doodle.com/kntcencbe95uechm. Also, please send any eBrary purchasing suggestions to Patti Rose (prose@monroe2boces.org).
  5. Upcoming Professional Development from the SLS. For more information, please visit: http://teachersites.schoolworld.com/webpages/SLS/calendar.cfm
    1. ProQuest and the Common Core Standards- 11/15 (3:30-5:00)
    2. Creating Book Teasers with Photo Story 3- 11/16 (7:30-8:30) or 11/17 (3:30-4:30)
    3. Report Builder in Follett Destiny- 11/30 (7:30-8:30) or 12/1 (3:30-4:30)

  1. Reminder, state regulations recently changed allowing Textbook Funds, Hardware Funds, and Software Funds to be used to purchase Library Media items. My suggestions, if you are trying to access these funds for additional items, tie it into the Common Core Learning Standards.

  2. The Talking Book and Brail Library now contains downloadable MP3 files which students can access from home. This is a free resource from the NY State Library. In order to qualify, a student must be either visually impaired OR have a learning disability. For more information, please feel free to contact me or visit: http://www.nysl.nysed.gov/tbbl/.

  3. Movie Licensing USA is a paid service that will allow schools to legally show most videos in school or on a school related function without infringing on copyright. When I was at Rush-Henrietta we were able to convince administration to purchase it for the entire district. Production studies include: Walt Disney, Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros, Sony Pictures, NBC/Universal, Dream Works, MGM, and 15 others. The company’s website is: http://movlic.com. If anyone is interested in purchasing this through the Media CoSer, please let Joshua Perks (jperks@monroe2boces.org) know. The more schools that purchase it, the better pricing we can obtain.
  4. Dignity Act: This act seeks to provide the New York State’s public elementary and secondary school students with a safe and supportive environment free from discrimination, intimidation, taunting, harassment, and bullying on school property or events. For more information, please visit: http://www.p12.nysed.gov/dignityact/.
  5. Learn 360 just released Common Core Standards correlations with their online streaming videos. After logging in, users can scroll down and on the left hand side they can click on the Common Core Standards link.
  6. The media department just purchased head phone splitters. The splitters will allow up to 5 headphones to plug into an iPod. These are available for loan through the SNAP Media Booking system.
  7. There is a new service available through NOVELny. JobNow! is a service that will allow New York State residents to upload a resume and cover letter and then be provided feedback and suggestions. The response time is typically 24-48 hours. This service also allows for live interview coaching, interview tips, career assessments, and other informational items. Note- this service can NOT support an entire class doing this as part of an assignment. To access this service, please visit: http://dmvgateway.nysed.gov/login?url=http://main.nydla.jobnow.ny.brainfuse.com

  8. Attached are the minutes from the September 20, 2011 Council Meeting. My apologies for the tardiness of the minutes.
