Greetings,

Please see below for various items:

  1. Reminder, we are looking to purchase eBooks from InfoBase Publishing.  Attached is a spreadsheet listing the various titles.  Please take a look at the list and send any suggestions to Jim Belair.

  2. If anyone has any VHS cases they no longer need, please send them to Joshua Perks at the Media Library.  We need additional cases to store our Flip Cameras and iPod Shuffles.

  3. We are offering a trial to Ebsco’s Literary Reference Center.  The trial is good until December 31.

Go to:

If there are any other databases you would like to trial, please let Jim know

  1. This was recently shared on one of the listservs I am on…SlimeKids is a website for elementary/middle school-age kids contains book trailers, educational games and literacy-related resources.   http://www.slimekids.com/.

  2. From World Book Database: Common Core standards for mathematics and language arts are now searchable across our reference databases. Simply go to the Educators’ Tools section of Student, Discover, or Advanced and select Common Core Standards from the first dropdown. You can then select the grade and subject area but keep in mind that only Common Core standards for math and language arts have been released.

  3. I wanted to share my thoughts and opinions regarding One Search (this is the federated searching tool Follett Destiny uses to access databases).  One Search is NOT the end all and be all for searching databases.  Where I see its biggest advantages are:
    1. A pass through to your databases- once any of the articles are clicked on, students will be directly taken to that database, and then they can do a full search within the database
    2. Students are reminded that there is a database containing information that they are looking for
    3. Students do not need to remember or know multiple sign on accounts to access the databases
    4. Teachers can create a course reading list containing articles from multiple database sources

  4. Jeffrey W. Cannell, Deputy Commissioner for Cultural Education, New York State Education Department, announced last week that “Creating the Future: A 2020 Vision and Plan for Library Services in New York State: Preliminary Recommendations of the New York State Regents Advisory Council on Libraries to the New York State Board of Regents”  is now available at http://www.nysl.nysed.gov/libdev/adviscns/rac/index.html.

  5. In 2013, the New York SLMS conference will be held in Rochester.  They are looking for people who would like to volunteer to help with the conference.  Attached is information for the next planning meeting which will be held November 7 from 4:30-6:00 at the Henrietta Public Library.

  6. Upcoming Professional Development Opportunities:
    1. Using the SLS eBook Library (open to teachers) October 18 from 8:30-11:30
    2. Advanced Cataloging within Destiny- October 19 (7:30-8:30) or October 20 (3:30-4:30)
    3. Soundzabound (open to teachers)- October 25 (7:30-3:30) or October 26 (3:30-4:30)
    4. Using Destiny Resource Lists (open to teachers)- October 26 (7:30-3:30) or October 27 (3:30-4:30)
