     Classroom  News

It seems like only yesterday that many of us were starting preschool here at St. Edward on-the-Lake.  Now, as the oldest students at the school, we are taking on more responsibilities and enjoying new privileges.  We are also looking forward to the many special fifth grade activities.

We really enjoy our weekly D.A.R.E. classes with Deputy King.  She is helping us learn valuable techniques for resisting drugs and violence.

Once again, Father Joe led, "The Blessing of the Pets," on the steps of our church.   It was interesting to see the wide variety of pets from our community.

We recently traveled to St. Clair County Community College for a performance of The Boogie Woogie Kid  by pianist Matthew Ball.   We were amazed at how quickly Mr. Ball's fingers flew across the piano keys.  A few of us are currently taking piano lessons and hope to eventually play like that.  After the concert, Mr. Gibbons led us on a wonderful tour of the college's exhibits.

On our trip to the Pine River Nature Center, we learned a great deal about early Native Americans.  We participated in a wide variety of interesting indoor and outdoor activities. We had a wonderful time, even though the weather didn't bless us with a nice sunny day.

The weather was much better for our All Saints Day parade.  Father Joe greeted us at the rectory and provided a special treat.

The International Symphony Orchestra's Youth Concert was an opportunity  to see a group of very talented performers do what they do best.  One day, some of our own classmates may be performing, up on that stage.

We were all very proud and honored to read our essays at this year's D.A.R.E. Graduation.  The graduation was our chance to celebrate what we had learned and also to pledge to resist the use of drugs and violence.   The distinguished guest speakers, at the event, stressed the importance of that commitment.  A special thank-you goes out to Mrs. Hopkins for hosting our reception and for making sure we had an awesome cake.

Before Christmas, we worked with our kindergarten buddies on a special gift for our parents.   Mrs. O'Mara also made some awesome "reindeer food" to make the gift even better.

We had roles as teachers in this year's Christmas program.   During rehearsals, we found out that job isn't always as easy as it looks.  By the actual performance, however, we had our students ready and the program went well.

A special thank-you goes out to Mrs. Matthews and Mrs. Romero for providing a great Christmas treat project.  Snowflakes have never tasted so good!

A recent science assembly gave us a chance to experiment with a variety of different materials and to examine their special properties.

We really enjoyed all the special Catholic Schools Week activities.  Roller skating at Skateport 2, the hallway dances, and the Shoe Box Book Parade were some of our favorite ones.

Did you know the rain forest was in Lakeport?  It arrived in a large truck.  This was a great opportunity to see some unique animals and to learn about conservation. It was also nice to be able to share this experience with our friends from Lakeport School and the surrounding community.

Storyteller, Ms. Rosie Chapman, presented; "The Life and Times of Rosa Parks."  She always includes audience participation in her programs, and we were more than happy to be part of the show.   In the process, we learned a great deal about Mrs. Parks and her role in the Civil Rights Movement.

We were very excited to display our completed solar system models. We really worked hard to make our projects artistic, as well as, accurate.

On February 25th, we traveled to St. Augustine School in Richmond to participate in the Academic Olympics.  As fifth graders, this was our first chance to participate in the competition with students from the other Blue Water Area Catholic Schools.  The events were Forensics, Math, Religion, and Problem Solving.

Our field trip, The Ford Rouge Factory Tour, helped us understand the history of the Ford Company and the complicated process of constructing a vehicle.  We were able to see the actual assembly of the F150 trucks.

The St. Edward on the Lake School Science Fair displays were very interesting and informative.  It was amazing to see the wide variety of topics selected for the projects.

Our door design, of the book The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane, won 1st place in the March is Reading Month contest.

The 5th Grade trip to Michigan Christian Youth Camp was amazing.  We had a great time while learning and practicing some new skills.  Many thanks to our parents for planning, fundraising, and chaperoning this special event.
