Introduction:  US and World History is a full year course designed to give the student an understanding of the major events in US history from Reconstruction through the 20^th Century.

Text:  America: Pathways to the Present

Goals:  As a result of your experiences in this course, you will develop a greater understanding of both the major historical events of the times and places we will study, as well as an improvement in your writing, reading and thinking skills.  The study of history is essential if we are to understand current events and institutions, and be able to fully realize our potential as citizens. 

Expectations: I have the right to teach and students have the right to learn.  Any behavior that violates those rights will not be tolerated.  To that end, please observe the following:

  1.  Be here on time with all supplies and materials.

  2.  Speak when given permission.

  3.  Listen to and follow directions.

  4.  Respect yourself and others.

  5.  Do your best work.

Consequences:

1.      “The Look.”

2.      Time out.

3.      Detention.

4.      Parent/Guardian contact.

5.      Referral.

**Please try to handle restroom needs during passing.  In the event of a rare emergency, ask for a pass at an appropriate time.  Please bring a water bottle each day, as I will not allow water breaks. No food, candy or gum will be allowed in class.

Deadlines and Make-up work:  All work is due on time or no credit will be given, unless other arrangements have been made well before the deadline.  If you have been absent, ask at least three people to see their agendas and notebooks to find out what you have missed.  Then, see me to make sure you have received accurate information and to schedule new deadlines, receive handouts etc. Missed tests must be made up within one week of the original exam date. Each quarter, I offer a “one time good deal” so you may turn in a major assignment one day late without penalty.  Be sure to plan your schedule carefully.  If one of my deadlines is in conflict with your needs, see me well before the due date and I will be somewhat flexible.  Wait, and you will not earn credit.  Notes from home on the day something is due usually will not help your case.

Grading:  I will grade all work on the traditional 10-point scale (90-100=A etc.)  Each semester, we will have approximately 650-750 points worth of credit to be earned in several categories.  I maintain the right to change the points possible, and add new kinds of assignments as the course proceeds. 

Daily work is to be kept in your notebook.  I will ask to see notebooks approximately every two weeks. Notebook checks are worth 50 points each.  Each unit of study will conclude with some combination of a project and or a test worth between 50 and 75 points.  There will be a number of small quizzes worth about 25 points each, and a final exam in worth approximately 75 points.

 I do not offer much in the way of extra credit, so complete the assigned work on time to the best of your ability.  Please see me with any concerns. I wish you great success in this class and I am happy to help.

Supplies:  Please make sure you come to class each day with all supplies.  You will need the following:

1. Textbook.
2. Three-ring binder with a section for history only.
3. Loose-leaf college ruled paper.
4. Three or four ballpoint pens in different, dark colors for notes.
5. Your agenda (planner).
