Welcome to the St. Pius X Library webpage!

My name is Miss Felock and I would like to take a little time to tell you about myself.  This is my first year at St. Pius X and I am very excited to meet all of the students and their families! I have a BS from Russell Sage College in Elementary Education/Psychology. I have also just graduated in May from the University at Albany with my MS in Information Sciences. I am looking forward to collabortaing with teachers, students and parents to make this year successful for everyone. If you are interested in helping out in the library, during bookfairs, or any other time I am always looking for volunteers, please send me an email at the address below.

Dear Students,

I am looking forward to working and having fun with all of you this year. I believe that the library is the center of the school which can support and enhance all subject areas.  I also believe that you should "Learn to Read and Read to Learn!" I plan on doing alot of reading this year and hope you will join me. Please feel free to let me know if there is a book you want to read that you cannot find in our library. I would also love to hear about your favorite books!

I will see you soon, and look forward to meeting everyone!

What's Happening in the Library:

Pre-K

The Pre-K is about to start a fun and exciting year in the library that will introduce them to new books and other students.  Here is the St. Pius X School Library we like to work together to excel at reading.  Our Pre-K students attend library with 5th and 6th graders.  They are paired up at the beginning of the year to read together.  Everytime they visit the library they are read to by (and sometimes begin to read to!) their older students partners.   These partners will also guide them as the year progresses teaching them how to handle books and how to check out materials from the library.  We find this relationship really blossoms throughout the year and enriches the experience of both the pre-k students and 5th and 6th grade students alike.

Kindergarten

In kindergarten we spend the first part of the year discussing the different areas of the library, different parts of books, the proper way to handle books and the check out procedures.  We read a lot of picture books and have a lot of fun drawing pictures about the books we read and discussing different kinds of books.  We even write a classroom poem together!  Kindergarten is the time when I really stress good practices in the library so as they grow into big kids and young adults they understand the different uses of the library and how it can help them in the future.

1st Grade

In first grade we spend a lot of time talking about how to handle the books and proper check out procedures.  We also spend a lot of time looking at illustrations and stories, becoming authors and illustrators ourselves during our author/illustrator project where we write and illustrate our own stories!  We read all kinds of picture books, and by the end of the year we are usually checking our Easy chapter books!  We discuss the different parts of a library and the different parts of a book.  We talk about Fiction v.s. Non-Fiction, poetry, and much much more!

2nd Grade

In second grade I work closely with all of the second grade teachers and much of the second graders lessons are based on classroom projects.  We talk alot about the different subject s covered in 2nd grade such as presidents, saints, planets, maps, animals and so on.  We also often discuss the different ways of researching topics in the library including non-fiction books, reference books and computers.  Most of the time we start out reading all kinds of interesting picture books and by the end of the year we are sharing and reading chapter books together!

3rd Grade

In 3rd grade we do A LOT of reading.  We usually get through 3 to 4 chapter books as a class in 3rd grade.  I work with the3rd grade teachers during the famous person Biography Projec t and the International Day project and children spend much of their researching for these topics in library.  Do this we review the different sections of the library and learn how to use the reference materials and computers for research purposes.  I am looking forward to learning all kinds of new and interesting things through our discussions and research!

4th Grade

This year I will be focusing on writing and reading, acknowledging how important the two are  together.  We will be learning about a new author every month, and the students will observe me give many author talks and book talks.  As the year progresses they will begin to give their own author talks and book talks, and I am hoping to have them write book review for my teacher pages website!  I would like them to come to every class with the book they are reading currently, their writing journal and a pencil.  Some days they will be reading and other days writing about their reading, in the hopes that both areas will grow together.  This is a new curriculum I am trying with the students, and I am working closely with 4th grade teachers to make sure we are meeting the needs of the classroom as well.  I am looking forward o watching them grow as writers and readers.

5th Grade

The 5th grade classes are given a great opportunity to work with the Pre-K students throughout the year.  First ½ of every class is spent reading to Pre-K buddies, and eventually teaching them how to properly handle and check out the library books.  The second ½ of class is used to check out books and/or do research for class projects.  Just like the 4th graders we have to fit a lot of work into a short period of time but the 5th graders always are up to the challenge.

6th, 7th and 8th Grades

I see 6th, 7th and 8th graders once a rotation.  They are to use this time as a study hall, reading, and writing, studying or doing other homework.  I am happy to help with any homework or project where they need to access information from the library or other resources.  They may also use any resource in the library including the laptop when it is available to help with any of their projects or homework.
