4. Febrary 1, 2010

Good afternoon everyone!

We had a great day today of learning today!

We're learning about character analysis in reading, animal habitats in science, graphs in math, and verbs ending in -s and -es in language arts.

A few announcements, students need to be decorating their Valentines boxes at hom and writing their valentines. The party is on the 12th of Febrary. Make sure that the slot for the valentines is wide enough for those that have candy attached.

Please contact your student's teacher for the list of names to use on your valentines.

One more reminder, please send in your $3.00 for the party fund! Thanks!

5. January 26, 2010

This week is our first 5 day week in awhile! :) We've got some exciting things happening.

Please be sure that you have turned in your signed report card envelope back to your child's teacher! That's very important. Thank you!

This week we're learning:

Reading: inferencing story problems, reading a text and showing their understanding showing their strategies. What we mean by strategies is going back in the text to prove their answers, showing where they found the answer in what they read (they should underline and number the evidence). In social studies we're studying Rosa Parks and Harriet Tubman.

Math: we're working on addition and subtraction with and without regrouping. Many of you may know this better by borrowing and carrying the 1. Please practice math facts with them at home so that this transition is made easier.

Science: we're reviewing the different characteristics and animals of the deciduous forests, coniferous forests, and the rainforest.

I'll post some more this week! Thanks for reading :)

6. Just an update

Good morning everyone!

Just to keep you up to date this week we are studying:

Reading/Social Studies: Martin Luther King, Jr. We are looking at his significance and impact as a leader. We are having a quiz on Friday over Martin Luther King, Jr. There should be a study guide coming home for your child to use at home to prepare.

Math: This week we are finishing up with money. We are having a CBA, or benchmark test by the end of the week. Please continue to practice counting coins with your child at home. This is a great help!

Another great thing to do at home is to practice basic math facts (7+8, 9+6, 8-6, etc).

Science: This week we're learning about the Rainforest! We're going to have a very exciting project coming up that will use all of our knowledge on forests!

Check out the spelling words for the week and continue to check back for more entries!

7. Long Weekend

Hello everyone!

So we have a long weekend starting tomorrow. Reminder there is no school on Friday (Jan. 15) or Monday (Jan. 18)

We had some very cute snowmen/women today at Robertson. Today was 'Dress Like A Snowman' day and we had a variety of cute scarves and hats. Miss Cizdziel had a very fasionable top hat decorated with red sequins!

This is also the end of the 2nd 9 weeks. Look for your child's report card coming out this coming Thursday, January 21st. Please sign the envelope and return it to your child's teacher.

Helpful Hint:Over the long weekend, make sure your child is practicing their math facts, telling time on an analog clock, and counting money.

Have a wonderful weekend and we'll see you all returning on Tuesday!

8. January 12, 2010

We've had a great couple of weeks back in school after our long break. All of us were excited to see the faces of our 2nd graders back at school. Although they were only gone 2 weeks, so many of them seemed to have grown 2 inches! Amazing!

This week in school we're learning about:

Reading: Continuing working with our Frog and Toad stories. Last week we read, Spring, The Lost Button, A Swim, The Letter, and The Story. Ask your student to share with you which one was their favorite.

Math: Continuing to work with money. At home it would be great practice to put a handful of change from your pocket in front of your child and help them to count up the total amount. We're only working with coins (penny, nickel, dime, quarter, and half-dollar).

Science:  This week we are learning the characteristics of deciduous and coniferous forest. See if your student can recall any of the facts they've learned about the different kinds of forests and trees. What kind of trees don't lose their leaves in the winter? What kind of trees animals live in the different forests?

Spelling: Spelling this week is a review week. In my class (Webb) we are doing a spelling bee. Please see the spelling list page for a copy of the words from the 9 weeks including the challenge lists to help you study. Each class may be doing different spelling review activities.

Please check back every week for new posts on the blog! We have some exciting times coming up in 2nd grade and you don't want to miss out!
