Classroom Guidance Classroom guidance is my favorite part of being a counselor because I get to visit with all students in their classrooms. I will be visiting each classroom at least ten times during the year for guidance. I will be using Life Skills Training - Promoting Health and Personal Development for guidance again this year in grades 3-5. Research showed that the curriculum was more relevant if presented to students on a weekly basis versus monthly. I will be visiting each 3rd-5th grade classroom weekly during the September - November months. Each grade level will have the same overall topic each week, but with different activities and discussions appropriate for their grade level. I will be using the Second Step Program in Kindergarten, First, and Second grades. It is a program designed to help children learn specific social-emotional skills. Research tells us that children who learn and use these skills are more likely to get along with others and do better in school. The program is divided into three parts: Empathy training, impulse control and problem solving, and anger management. How Full Is Your Bucket? The theory of the dipper and the bucket comes from this book by Tom Rath. Each of us has an invisible bucket. It is constantly emptied or filled, depending on what others say or do to us. When our bucket is full we feel great. When our bucket is empty we feel awful. Refer to book list to read more about this theory. Please check your child's grade level to see specific lessons being taught during the school year. If you have any further questions about the guidance program, please feel free to contact me by phone or email. I'm looking forward to being in the classroom with your students this year!
