For additional information about the FFA chapter and activities, please visit our chapter homepage at: www.whitedeerffa.ffanow.org Currently at White Deer our Agriculture students can take the following courses of study: Freshman--Principles of Agriculture, Food & Natural Resources This is a full year course for one high school elective credit. Students will learn about the American and Texas agriculture industry, history of agriculture, FFA membership and leadership development. Students will look at topics including soil science, plant and animal production, food production and safety and environmental issues as they relate to agriculture. Sophomores--Small Animal Management/ Ag Mechanics & Metals These are both one semester courses that will award one half credit each. In Small Animal Management, students will learn about how to care for and train companion animals (dogs and cats) as well as explore the worlds of exotic pets and small livestock. This course will require daily interaction with animals through a dog training project. Students will be working with a variety of species and will be allowed to bring approved animals into the classroom. In Ag Mechanics & Metals students will receive training in carpentry, electrical, plumbing, exterior and interior finishing and repair, small engine troubleshooting and repair and metal work including oxy-fuel cutting, arc welding, MIG welding and plasma cutting. Students will be encouraged to build a small project of their design for this class. Sophomores & Juniors--Agribusiness Marketing & Management This course will explore the world of marketing and finance using the agricultural food & fiber system as a teaching model. Students will be challenged to use an agriculture product to develop a marketing plan and sales presentation for their product. Juniors--Principles of Landscape Design and Turfgrass Management This year long, one credit course, will teach students the basics of plant growth and development, selection of plants for use in landscaping, landscape design, construction and maintenance. This class will be working on projects around the White Deer ISD complex and community. Students will be assigned a home or business and asked to design a landscape plan for the property. Some elements of interior plant management and floral design will be included. Seniors--Advanced Animal Science This year long course is can be the scientific capstone for Seniors needing a fourth science credit. Advanced Animal Science is an intensive course that will cover knowlegde and skills that a student will need to pursue a career as a Veterinary Technician or a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. The course work will constist of a minimum of 40% labratory activities including hands-on work with livestock, horses, companion animals and exotics. Juniors & Seniors--Agricultural Mechanics Students will hone their mechanical skills in carpentry and welding in this year long course. Individual and group projects will be constructed. Seniors--Practicum in Agriculture Food and Natural Resources Seniors in this application only course will meet as a class during the school day then be released to go to work in the afternoons. Students in Ag. Careers MUST complete a minimum of 15 hours of scheduled on-the-job work each calendar week. Failure to not meet this requirment will result in the loss of credit and removal from class. This course counts for 3 credits. - Mr. Reed, ADVISOR
