        Reading Olympics

2009-2010

Join us for another year of the Roosevelt Reading Olympics!

Dear Parents;

The goal of the Reading Olympics is to challenge students to read from a variety of genres and to stretch their ability to read longer words.  The PTA does not consider this a competition, rather a  celebration of reading which will be recognized at a medal ceremony at the end of the school year in which we hope to include each and every Roosevelt student.

To participate please record the books read from September 1, 2009 to April 23, 2010 on the Reading Olympics form.  Then on or before April 23rd turn the completed form in to the Reading Olympics box in the library.  Easy!

The front page is a list of categories of literature and the specified number of books from each of those categories required for each level of medal.  Record the title of each book under the appropriate category.  Some books will fit under multiple categories, so you might want to write in pencil in case you have to move them around later.

The back page is for Award books and Free Choice Books.  An Award Book is any book which has won a major award for literature or illustrations.  Some awards are the Caldecott, Newbery, Sequoyah, or Corretta Scott King Award.  Any major National or Oklahoma award is acceptable.  Please note the number of award books needed for each medal level is listed.  The Free Choice Books are any books of your choosing.  The number needed for each medal level are also listed.

Any level of difficulty you feel is appropriate for your child will be accepted.  There is no minimum or maximum length of book required.  We hope to encourage students to increase their reading stamina by attempting longer works.  For those students ready to read longer books we will allow one long book to count for several lines on the form.  Please see the "Challenge" note on the bottom of your particular form for specific details.  Since older students typically read longer books, fewer books are required for them.  It is, therefore, not mandatory to count a longer book on multiple lines.

Reading aloud is a great way to spend time together.  If you do this in your family please feel free to count those books on your Reading Olympics form.  If you have a student who is not yet reading independently please record the books you read to that student.

Please record the books that are read completely.  While you won't always finish every book you ever begin to read, the Readingly Olympics is only for books read in their entirety.

Join us and READ Y'ALL!
