Language Arts in Room 8!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Langauge Arts is made up of Word Work, Reading, and Writing. In Room 8 we run both Reader's Workshop and Writer's Workshop.

Word Work! (8:05-8:50 a.m)

Word Work is spent learning new spelling strategies, prefixes and suffixes and Greek and Latin roots. Word Work time is focused on helping us unlock the mysteries of the English Language by learning the make up of words. The more we now about Greek and Latin Roots, Prefixes and Suffixes, the broader our vocabulary becomes!

Read-Aloud! (9:20-9:30a.m)

Read-aloud is a wonderful time to share a book together as a class! While we read-aloud, we practice our reading strategies and are able to think deeply about a story. Often we read the classics, including Robin Hood and Alice in Wonderland! These wonderful stories are full of valuable lessons and rich language.

Reader's Workshop (9:20-10:00 a.m)

Mini-Lessons

The morning always starts with a mini-lesson, sharing a reading strategy or skill for students to work on during Reader's Workshop.

Reader's Workshop

During Reader's Workshop we read books from our Book Box, practicing the reading skills we learn about during the Mini-Lesson. Students respond to their reading in the Reader's Workshop Notebook. Students also read with their reading partners during this time. Reader's Workshop is all about reading "just-right" books for us and being engaged in our reading. Fiction and Non-Fiction books are read during this time........anything that is interesting to the student! Students keep a reading log to track what books and genres they read. Students also reflect each day on the time they spent reading. Mrs. Birnie conferences with students about their reading and students can join small groups to become better readers or just learn a new reading strategy. Reader's Workshop is a time to really read and get "lost" in our books!

Closing

The closing time is when we reflect on our reading time. Students give book talks or "Shout-Outs" and have the chance to share what they are reading.

Non-Fiction Reading Time (10:00-11:00)

We devote about 60 minutes a day to non-fiction reading. Often the reading is focused on Social Studies or Science, but sometimes we are reading to research or just to learn new and interesting information! Some students might be reading with a non-fiction book group and preparing to present the newly learned information to the class. Non-fiction reading time is very important as it gives us so much background knowledge!

Writer's Workshop (1:15-1:45 M,T 1:15-2:15 W,Th)

Writer's Workshop is a time to write, write, write!!!!!! We have writing projects that are required, and when those are complete, students have personal projects in which they work. Students meet with Mrs. Birnie to conference about their writing. Students LOVE writing and especially love choosing their own projects! At the end of the year, students go through their writing projects and choose some of their favorites to publish. Grammar is addressed during the Writer's Workshop mini-lessons and students are expected to use new skills in their writing.
