OLWEUS Bully Prevention Program OLWEUS Bully Prevention Program

Olweus Bullying Prevention Program

(prepared for 2/7/12 & 2/9/12 informational parent meetings)

Olweus is:

·         Prevention program based on education

·         Proactive rather than reactive

·         Based on following Jesus’s teachings

Olweus is not:

·         A discipline program

·         Does not take a punitive approach

Forms (think about it):

·         Communication tool from school to home

·         Does not necessarily imply the label of ‘bully’ being applied to the student

Definition of bullying behavior – behavior is:

·         Negative actions (to include words, gestures, etc.)

·         Repeated and/or over time

·         Aimed at one or more persons

·         Creates an imbalance of power

Queen of All Saints follows a conduct plan that uses natural and logical consequences to the extent possible (not based on equality or revenge, rather fairness and the Gospel message) –

 p. 10-11 in the 2011-12 Parent & Student Handbook

School follows what is called the ‘five fingers’ guideline:

1.      Accountable for behavior (admit you did it)

2.      Responsible for actions (accept you are responsible, don’t blame others, own it)

3.      Restitution ( how to fix it? includes consequences)

4.      Parent communication (make sure parents get accurate and timely information)

5.      WWJD (forgiveness and move forward)

The Olweus Committee would also like to thank those individuals who were able to attend our parent meetings;

Mrs. Marr, Mrs. Eshelman, Mrs. Wirth, Mrs. Schueler, Mrs. Heib, Mrs. Kennedy, Mrs. Miller, Mrs. Finnegan, Mrs. Franke and Mrs. Cunningham
