The President and White House China Assignment
You are Invited to the White House for Dinner... Assignment WITH AN AVERAGE of 12 formal state dinners and 150 receptions every year, the White House has gone through a lot of china over the years. Presidents use the china of previous presidents, but many have their own china designed for use during their administration.
1. Choose -- a U.S. president of the 20th or 21st century to research, to write a short first person report and to design a White House China pattern.
2. Research -- Read about the president. You can find information about U.S. presidents online, in biography books and books about U.S. Presidents. The more you read, the more ideas you will have for this project.
3. Write-- a 1 to 2 page typed report about the president in the “first person”. Pretend that he is introducing himself. Make sure that your writing in done in the first person and that you are using YOUR OWN WORDS (no cutting and pasting from online--- that is plagiarism). Write your report in a proper form that includes an introduction, body and conclusion. Include in your report the following: A. Interesting facts about his family and early life B. Education / training C. Early career and experiences( in the military, business, politics) D. Dates of his administration and major achievements or failings of his administration E. One quote-- choose one that you particularly think describes the president’s personality or goals. F. Other facts that are particular to your president. G. Include a Source Citation with your report. USE PROPER FORMAT
4. Design a set of White House China for your President-- a plate, cup and saucer and utensils. Make sure to include at least 5 symbols that explain about the president’s background, personality,achievements or events during his presidency in your setting. You may certainly use the template given to you in class or create your own.
5. Think about the symbolism and the colors, patterns, and illustrations that you use.
6. Explain your symbols - - Make sure to explain each of the 6 symbols on a typed 5 x7 inch index card. i.e. Yellow Rose-- state flower of Texas- L.B.Johnson
Have fun. Use fine-line marker to outline your dishes and utensils. Feel free to use markers, gold and silver pens, colored pencils and watercolors. Some class time will be given for your project work.
