There should be a little voice in your head like the storyteller is saying it. And if there's not, then you're just lookin' at the words. ~ LaKeisha ~ (9th Grader in San Francisco) Read the rest of the article about reading for understanding by following the link to WestEd's R&D Alert Newsletter, Summer 1999. Checking Books Out Third graders may check one book per week and are encouraged to read the book at home, and then take an AR quiz at school. Students who don't return their book on the day it is due will receive a computer generated notice to remind them the book needs to be returned. I use the notice as a way to communicate with the parent that the book wasn't returned on the day it was due. No fines are charged at school, but all lost or damaged books must be paid for. Students will be checking books out on the following days*: Tuesday - 3A & 3D *If school was not in session on their regularly scheduled check out students will check out books as follows: Wednesday - 3A & 3D
What Do We Do in Third Grade? In third grade we begin to concentrate on the dictionary and research. Students will develop a working knowledge of the dictionary and how to use guide words when locating words. When collecting research information the student will learn how to collect bibliographic information from the title page. Beginning to locate and record information from nonfiction text is also an important component for students in this grade. We also enjoy story time and Reader's Theatre in third grade.
