Writer's Workshop Fifth Grade Writer's Workshop

Welcome to Fifth Grade Writer's Workshop

Welcome to the Fifth Grade Writer's Workshop website.  We am looking forward to getting to know your child and experience a fun and exciting year of learning.  This year in Writers Workshop, we will be gaining a deeper understanding of the Writing Process and the Six Writing Traits while at the same time embedding Spelling and Grammar strategies to develop independence, fluency, and accuracy in writing.  Over the first few weeks we will be sharing the expectations with you and your child.  If you have any concerns at any time please do not hesitate to email or call your child's homeroom teacher.

Our Learning environment will consist of the following:

WRITER'S WORKSHOP

Your child will spend 30 - 35 minutes a day writing with their homeroom teacher.  Students will create a Writer's Notebook they can call their own.  We will engage in the Writing Process which consist of Prewriting, Drafting, Revising, Editing, and Publishing.  We will look in more depth at The Six Traits of Writing (Ideas, Organization, Voice, Word Choice, Sentence Fluency, and Conventions)  which will help the students take charge of their own writing and use the knowledge to write stronger pieces.

Ways you can help at home

*Read with your child, the reading-writing connection is powerful.

*Be a listener.  Ask your child to share his or her writing.

*Talk with your child about experiences and interests you have shared.  This helps them come up with ideas to write about.

*See your child as a writer.  Take every opportunity to encourage.
