Dear Parents, We are very excited about your child being in 2nd grade at Ogle Elementary. In order to serve you and your student in the best way this school year, the second grade team created this outline to share the procedures and policies specific to our grade level. It is our hope that by combining the information into one location, the partnership between school and home will be created. Thursday Folders This is a weekly form of communication from school to home and back again to school. You should expect to find graded student papers and information from the office in the folder. Weekly newsletters will be available each Thursday containing updated information on our current areas of study and important dates of events for 2nd graders and parents. Unless you specifically request a hard copy, the newsletter will be available on the second grade website. Please help us keep communication strong by viewing the newsletter on the website and viewing the contents of the folder Thursday night. Thursday folders should be returned to school on Friday. All papers are to be kept and reviewed at home unless a parent signature and/or corrections have been requested. It’s a good idea to keep all graded papers at home until the end of each nine weeks in case there is a conflict with a grade or missing paper. Should you have any questions, please contact your child’s teacher. Second Grade Discipline As a second grade team we have decided to adopt a discipline system that will ensure an equal educational opportunity for all students. Students will be able to earn money (paper coins) for following the expectations in our classrooms and around the school. The students will then be able to use their money to buy special rewards that can be used in the classroom (ex: No Shoes for the Day). Your child will have a red Behavior and Homework Folder that will come home every day. Inside this red folder, you will find a “Nine Weeks Conduct Calendar”. Our goal with this calendar is to communicate with parents areas where your child might be struggling and areas where they are making excellent choices. This is not meant to be a negative communication log, but rather a method to reach out to parents each day. Please look over this calendar with your child and initial it daily. Each morning we will ask that students enter the classroom and place their red folder on their desk. Their teacher will check to see that they have brought their folder and that the parent has initialed the day before. Throughout the day the teachers are constantly circulating the room and observing student behavior. If there is a consistent behavior issue, your child’s teacher will document the behavior by writing the code (found in the “Areas of Needed Improvement Key”, located at the bottom of your child’s Conduct Calendar) corresponding to the area of concern in that day’s box. If your child has a sticker, stamp, or smiley face in the box for that day, it means that he or she had a wonderful day at school! If we feel that further explanation is needed we might jot a quick note or inform you that an email or phone call may be expected. This calendar is an excellent resource for parents and teachers to observe behavior patterns and contributors to student successes as well as factors that might have a negative effect on students’ actions. If you receive a comment and would like to discuss it with your child’s teacher, please feel free to contact the teacher through email, phone call or you may also paperclip a note to the calendar for the teacher to pick up the next day. We will make sure to get back with you within 24 hours. Student expectations for the Second Grade: 1. Follow Directions 2. Mutual Respect- No Put Downs 3. Hands, Feet, and all objects to yourself 4. Work quietly and efficiently We know that each student is able to adhere to these expectations; however, if a student chooses not to follow these guidelines, there will be consequences. The consequences may include the following: - A verbal reminder of the rule broken and a request on how to improve. - A change in seating or place in line to help improve the situation. - A cooling off, break from activity time period. - A practice session working on the expected behavior. - A form of parent communication on the situation. - A chat with the counselor on how to be more successful. - A reinforcement visit to the principal on ways to meet the above guidelines. *The order of consequences may vary depending of the nature and frequency of the behavior. The school-home connection is a valued and important part of student success. We want you to be as informed as possible on your child’s daily experiences and growth in our classrooms.
Arrival and Dismissal Information Adult supervision will begin at 7:30 AM in your child's classroom. Breakfast will be available in the cafe from 7:20-7:45. Students will go directly to their classroom when they arrive at school or after they eat breakfast. This year the arrival and dismissal times have changed. It is very important that you understand that school starts at 7:50 instead of 8:00. Arriving on time allows your child to begin his or her day more relaxed and comfortable. Your child is tardy at 7:50 AM. The school day officially ends at 2:50 PM this year. For the safety of the child, your teacher must be notified in writing if there is a change in the way your child will be going home. Please familiarize yourself with the Ogle dismissal procedures! Lunch Information Students can either bring their lunch to school or buy their lunch in the cafeteria. Cafeteria lunches are $2.15 for students and $2.85 for adults. You may prepay for your child’s lunch in person by cash or check. You may also prepay for lunches online, find lunch menus, and receive additional information at http://www.friscocafe.org/. You may join your child for lunch anytime. After signing in at the office and receiving a visitor’s badge, feel free to meet us in the cafeteria at 12:30. Snack Information Your child may bring a water bottle and a healthy snack each day if they choose. Please do not send a snack that is messy, requires utensils, or that contain a lot of sugar (candy). Birthdays Birthdays are very special to children. If you wish, you may send a treat for your child’s class on your child’s birthday. The items must be purchased or store bought. Please check with your child’s teacher in advance to see how many treats will be needed. We also ask that you inform your child’s teacher in advance if you plan on providing class treats for your child’s birthday. We Love Volunteers! We are always happy to have parents and other family members join us for school events. In order to volunteer or be involved in student activities at Ogle, you will need to go online and complete the Volunteer Form (https://forms.friscoisd.org/backgroundcheck/). You must complete this form each year! Please go ahead and submit this form as soon as possible. We would love for you to join us on field trips later in the year! Other Communication We care a great deal about your child. We need to know if he or she is happy, sad, sick, or frightened about anything. Changes in family life such as loss of a pet, divorce, death in the family, mother returning to work, new baby or exciting upcoming event may affect behavior at school. We would appreciate an e-mail, note, or a phone call if there is anything happening that might affect your child. We do not necessarily need to know the nature of the concern, only that your child might need some extra attention or understanding. You can always email us if there is anything we can do to help your child be successful at school. Our goal is to have a wonderful year of learning, and we feel these guidelines will help everyone to achieve these goals. We would like to thank you, our Partners in Education, in advance for your support in making this an AWESOME school year. Sincerely, The Second Grade Team
