A community of educators, passionate about improving professional learning in P-16 education in New York State.

Welcome to the Learning Forward
New York Web Site.

Our goal: Every educator engages in effective professional learning every day so every student achieves.

What's New?

VOICE - Online Community

Learning Forward New York is creating a new online community for professional learning. This will be a private networking space where Learning Forward members can share resources and discuss related professional learning practices. This new community is called VOICE (Virtual Online Interactive Community for Educators).

In addition, this  will provide learning spaces for discussion of the three Regents priorities of Common Core Standards Teacher/Leader Effectiveness and Inquiry/Data Driven Instruction. This is not just a Learning Forward community! We are designing this in a way that other professional groups (even small ones) can have their own online community for sharing resources and ideas. Plus each of these additional groups can participate in the learning spaces around state initiatives.

This is an innovative use of social networking technology to support continuous teacher/leader learning through collaboration.  Watch for more information this summer.

If you are interested in joining the workgroup that is building this community and introducing it to other groups, please contact Dick Jones.

Urban Schools Project

Learning Forward New York was honored to receive a $10,000 grant from the Learning Forward Foundation to implement our innovative project to support small urban schools in the Hudson and Mohawk Valleys. Using the VOICE online community, we will create a private learning space for educators from a dozen small urban districts in upstate New York. These district are small districts with usually less than 10,000 students, but have all the school improvement issues of poverty, mobility and low student achievement.  They are unlike their neighboring districts leaving them is isolated geographically.  Our idea is to connect staff these districts with similar needs in a virtual online environment to share problems and solutions. Our partners in this effort are CASDA and Mid-Hudson Principals Center.

We are looking for educators to assist us in developing this innovative resource assist urban schools.  If you are interested, please contact Dick Jones.

Making Learning the Focus

In the past year, we have presented in partnership with local BOCES or School Districts several regional workshops on professional learning communities. We are updating these workshops to include the wealth of new materials from Learning Forward and also show how professional learning is the key to implementing the Regents priorities effectively and without undue stress. We are seeking additional members of this work group to give presentations to professional groups.

If you work like to learn more about these initiatives or volunteer, please contact Dick Jones
