North Middle School Colorado Springs School District 11 Accredited by the International Baccalaureate Organization in 1998 The IB Mission Statement The International Baccalaureate Organization aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment. These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right. North Middle School is a whole school International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme, providing two tracks of study - the Diploma Pathway and the Standard MYP Path. Both tracks are open to any middle school student in Colorado, although the Diploma Pathway requires some additional qualifications. The Tracks are explained below. Diploma Pathway The North Diploma Pathway is for students requiring an academically rigorous program, and who plan on continuing IB studies at Palmer High School in either the Middle Years (grades 9 & 10) or Diploma (grades 11 & 12) IB Programmes. North’s Diploma Pathway has a strong emphasis on the international perspective, and includes participation in Service Learning activities. Diploma Pathway students study eight subjects - math, science, humanities (history and geography), English, physical education, arts (music, visual art and drama) technology and a World Language (French, Spanish or Mandarin) - for a minimum of 50 hours each year. Enrollment in the North Diploma Pathway is by way of a successful application. Standard MYP Path The North Standard MYP Path incorporates almost all aspects of an International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme. Standard Path is available to all students and has a strong emphasis on the international perspective as well as involving Service Learning activities. Traditional Track students study seven subjects - math, science, humanities (history and geography), English, physical education, arts (music, visual art and drama) and technology. Participation in World Language classes (French, Spanish or Mandarin) is currently limited by class size. Enrollment in the North Standard MYP Path is automatic when students attend North Middle School, although there is an abbreviated application to complete. The IB Office at 328-2427 or Mr. Bill Shell at 328-2429 or william.shell@d11.org.
Letters of Acceptance for the 2012-2013 school year will be mailed April 18.
Applications may still be submitted for all grade levels, but space is very limited and paperwork needs to be in as quickly as possible.
