Interactive Student Notebook
|
|
The purpose of the interactive student notebook (ISN) is to enable students to be creative, independent thinkers and writers. Interactive notebooks are used for class notes as well as for other activities where the student will be asked to express his/her own ideas and process the information presented in class. All testable material will be contained in the ISN. ISN Format: First page: Title / Author's page - include your name, subject, and class period. Second and Third Page: Tables of Contents or TOC Fourth and Fifth Page: Unit 1 Page - list the title of the unit and you may draw pictures that relate to the unit. Sixth Page begins the notes of our study. The layout should be: This scale should be glued on the inside front cover of your ISN: | 4- I am a master historian just like ____________! | I can use what I learned with complete accuracy and go beyond what was taught. |
| | 3- I am a certified historian! | I am confident that I understand the information and can discuss or apply it with accuracy. |
| | 2- Historian in training. | I know most of the information taught. I can discuss the information, but with minor errors. However, if I could use my notes, I am confident that I would do well. |
| | 1- I am a novice. It is all new to me. | Even with help, I don’t understand or cannot discuss the information. |
| These rules should be written on the last page of your notebook: Interactive Student Notebook (ISN) Rules (Composition Book) 1. The ISN must be brought to class every day. 2. NO Ripping out pages from the ISN. 3. Right side of notebook is used for daily class notes – Words of Wisdom (WOW). 4. The top left side is used for the Review and Process (RAP). 5. The bottom left side is used to “Work it Out” (WIO) and process the information taught. 6. All work done in the WIO must be your own work. (This is to assess comprehension.) 7. You must write the TOPIC #, TOPIC TITLE, and DATE on the top right hand corner for each entry. 8. Table of Contents must be filled in with each new entry. 9. Your ISN is part of the 30% Class work grade and must be kept up to date. 10. If you are absent, it is YOUR responsibility to copy down the missed assignments from the Master ISN Teacher Book. 11. No doodling – no pictures that are irrelevant to the topic. | "Many student notebooks are drab repositories of information filled with uninspired, unconnected, and poorly understood ideas. Interactive Student Notebooks, however, allow students to record information about history in an engaging way" (TCI, 6) | | As you learn new ideas in class, you will be using various types of writing and graphic techniques to record this information. Then, you will be doing something with these ideas instead of just letting the information sit in your notebook. This will allow you to use your critical-thinking skills, take advantage of your creativity, and become more independent in your education! | | The Interactive Student Notebook (ISN) approach has been classroom tested in many schools around the United States. The approach helps students in their education, for it requires them to use both linguistic and visual intelligences, turns note-taking into an active process, helps students become organized as they learn, and demonstrates student growth and achievement over a period of time. | | EVALUATION - Your notebooks will be checked periodically. At times, I will spot check your notebooks and give you instant feedback. Other times, I will grade your notebooks on thoroughness, quality and accuracy of work, organization, and visual appeal. Every assignment should be complete and neat. Also, your artistic or creative touch should be visible throughout the notebook. Use color, pictures, and diagrams in order to reinforce class materials. You will also be evaluating your notebooks! | | It is also important to realize that it is your responsibility to obtain class notes, materials, and notebook assignments in the case that you are absent from class. Failure to do so will result in an incomplete notebook and less knowledge and creativity! I know you will have a ton of questions concerning your notebooks, and I will try to answer all of them as we progress in class. | | Remember that this is a great chance to use your creativity, and change a boring notebook into a dynamic work of educational art! |
