ESL English as a Second Language
Nicole Alzamora

The ESL program at the Early Learning Center depends on your child's level of English. If your child scored Beginning to Mid level in English, your child will be pulled out for 40 minutes and receive assistance in class for 40 minutes. If your child scored a High level in English, your child will recieve assistance in class for 40 minutes. Unless, your child presents a struggle in a certain area, then I will pull out your child for 40 minutes until he/she has mastered the skill.

ESL students will be tested on the New Jersey State Exam called the WIDA ACCESS Test by March - April time frame (Please View Calendar). If your child scores a 4.5 or higher and performs well academically, your child will be considered for exiting out of the ESL program. If your child presents a difficulty in class not due to a langauge barrier, your child will be considered to be exited out of the program and will be considered for a program that will service your child better academically.

If your child continues on with the ESL program, the child does have special accommodations during standardized testing. The accommodations are as follows:

a) Your child will recieve an extra time and a half with testing

b) Your child will be provided a bilingual dictionary (If necessary)

c) Your child could have a break down of questions, not stories.

d) ONLY if child has entered this country within the first six months, the child is not required to be tested in Reading ONLY.
