 Math Notebook
An important part of leaning math is to maintain an organized math notebook. Notes are taken regularly in class -- to record definitions and work through practice problems. Students are allowed to use their notebooks on some tests and all quizzes, so a complete, well-organized notebook is a valuable resource. Notebooks will be graded at the end of each unit (typically every 4-6 weeks), and students can earn 5 points each week by keeping their notebook current. The notebook makes up 10% of your overall grade.
The notebook itself needs to be a spiral (or bound) notebook either 8.5" x 11" or 10.5" x 8". It should be a "quadrille" -- squares (graph paper) this will make it easier to record drawings and tables along with writings. You will never tear out your notebook pages. Your separate binder or graph paper is for assignments.
Your math notebook will include the following:
- Class notes. Unit objectives, formal definitions, and example problems. To see the class notes for any day, click on the "Homework" menu (on the left) and then select "Class Notes-Algebra" (or click here.) Be sure to select the month and year of interest. You can then view or download the daily notes. This is a good way to catch up if you were absent, or to make sure you got all of the notes for the day.
- Practice problems. To practice and illustrate math concepts needed to solve homework, quiz, or project-related problems.
- Reflections. A place where you write, in your own words, the definition of math concepts, describe how to solve problems, along with your personal record of what you have learned or any outstanding questions or issues that you might have.
To support your notebook you need the following supplies (a complete list of required materials can be found here):- Pen, pencil, highlighter.
- Glue stick (to glue small "cut-outs" into your notebook), or tape, or a stapler.
In addition to the formal grading of your overall notebook (at the end of each unit), there will be spot checks of your notebook with each quiz. One or more quiz questions will require you to identify, copy, or use items and information that should be in your notebook. If something is missing from your notebook, you may not be able to answer those questions.
