4/14/12

I hope everyone enjoyed their spring break with lots of rest and relaxation!

11/21/11

Since we have such a short week this week, we will not be having a spelling test.  Today I am sending home the new words, which will also be studied the week after Thanksgiving break.

The practice test will be on Wednesday, November 30th

and the final test will be on Friday, December 2nd.

We will also be studying the same high frequency/sight words for both weeks.

11/10/11

As I get closer to my due date, November 30th, I wanted to let you know a little bit about my leave.  I plan to work right up until I have the baby.   I plan to return at the beginning of the 3rd Quarter, which is January 16th.  Nancy Appel will be my substitute. The kids are going to LOVE her! Thank you for all the well wishes and prayers.  They are greatly appreciated.

We also started IXL Math this week.  This web program is great because it provides extra support as we make the transition from Michigan's state standards to the national Common Core Standards.  I handed out the login information for the kids' use at home.  Please let me know if you need that info again and I will gladly resend it home.

11/7/11

Spelling tests begin this week!  They will be every week, unless I send a note home stating otherwise.  Normally your child will bring home a weekly list of words every Monday.  The list contains 8 words.  For some reason each list has 6 regular words and 2 “challenge words”, but please note that  we will be studying all 8 words each week.  Along with the spelling words, there will be a sentence that contains some of the weekly words.  During the test, I will say the sentence and the students will need to write it.  There will be a practice test on Wednesdays and the final test on Fridays.  Please review and practice the words and sentence with your child.  The weekly words will go along with the stories that we are currently reading in our Houghton-Mifflin series.

There will also be weekly challenge words.  I will send these words home with those students who correctly spell all (or most) of the words on Wednesday’s practice test.  Each student will have the opportunity to receive the challenge words each week.

If you loose your list that I sent home, you can always look on here to find the week's words.

10/7/11

We have completed the first math chapter dealing with making numbers and patterns. Now we are on to our second chapter that is all about beginning addition and subtraction.  It's great that our class already has a head start since we've been doing XtraMath in kindergarten and first grade.

We have also finished up two phonics units.  We've been reviewing and practicing beginning and ending letter sounds, the short vowels a and i, and we've begun to discuss syllables and whether they're open or closed.

Today we will also be finishing our portion of the CogAt Test.  The kids all did a great job!!!  We will have time to start daily reading groups, ReadingEggs, and XtraMath back up on Monday.  I know that they've missed all three this past week.

Thank you to the parents who were able to attend the field trip to Upland Hills with us!  We had a blast! :)

Our classroom code for online book ordering through Scholastic is FZYY8.

October book orders are due back next Friday, October 14th.

9/30/11

We will begin the CogAt test on Monday, Oct. 3rd.  This is during the same time as the rest of the upper grades will be taking the IOWA Test.

Please note that we are NOT taking the IOWA test.  1st Graders take a Cognitive abilities test, along with 3rd and 5th graders, that assesses the cognitive development of students.  The test measures students' learned reasoning abilities, which are developed through in-school and out-of-school experiences.  The questions require students to demonstrate their reasoning abilities in three symbol systems most closely related to success in school: verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and nonverbal reasoning.  Essentially, this test will help me to better understand and accommodate the way that your child learns.

9/22/11

Just a reminder that field trip slips and money are due back to the classroom by tomorrow.  Upland Hills will be a great educational experience for all of us!  Check out everything we will be doing there:

During the Farm Show, the farmer will demonstrate how the animals are used for food and fiber including milking the cow, making butter, sheering the sheep and spinning the wool into yarn.

We will take a Walking Tour from barn to barn to visit the animals up close for a more hands on experience.

They also have a Storybook Trail hayride out to the woods to walk through a story where the pages of the book come to life. This Fall, their story, created by Upland Hills Farm employees, is A Bale of Hay Goes a Long Way.

Everyone will walk to the Pumpkin Patch to pick a pumpkin to take home. All pumpkins are pie pumpkins, which means they are usually 6–12 inches in diameter, just the right size for the students to carry themselves.

In addition, each class will be given a Bucket of Corn to take to the pond to feed the ducks and geese.

There are also two unique Playgrounds, with wooden tractors and horses on them, for some free time after lunch.

9/12/2011

Today your child brought home his/her guided reading group book.  These books are leveled so that your child is learning reading strategies at his/her level.  Please read it with him/her each night and return it in his/her daily folder the next day so that we can continue our journey with that book too.

Thank you for your continued support!

9/8/2011

We are off to a great start in first grade!  We are learning and implementing lots of new rules and procedures.  We are still reviewing from kindergarten in most subjects.  We hope to start new reading groups and our first math chapter on Monday.

We are in the planning process for a kindergarten-first grade field trip to Upland Hills Farm near Oxford.  We plan to go Wednesday, October 4th and be gone all day. More information will be coming home soon.
