We will be starting to participate in AR more intensely starting in January.  Each student will have a goal in range from 2-12 or so points, determined by their STAR Reading scores.  There is additional information regarding AR on the DCES website as well as the class website.

I will be sending home a printout with your student’s AR record thus far.  This is simply to give you an idea of how much they are testing, how well they are doing and how many tests they are passing.  Each test earns them a certain number of points based on their score and that is how they meet their AR goal for the nine weeks.

If your student is consistently not earning points (60% and above) I would encourage you to work more with them at home on their comprehension skills, asking them questions about what they are reading.  The test is entirely based on their comprehension of the book, which is why I try to give them books in reading group that are an appropriate comprehensive level.

We will read books in group they can test on, but they should also be checking out all AR books from the library.  I keep a box of AR books in the room as well for them to choose from.  Starting next nine weeks, they will be required to meet their goal to attend the AR Party.  They are given a lot of opportunity to read and test in class but it never hurts to work at home too!  If you have questions, please let me know.
