Susan Mathis has been teaching for 23 years at Oakland Terrace and Woodlin Elementary Schools. She has also taught at Glen Haven, Rock View, Highland and Bethesda Elementary Schools. This year Ms. Mathis will also be teaching 6th grade orchestra at Westland Middle School. In addition to teaching, Ms. Mathis has been co-conductor of the South County Sixth Grade Honors Band since 2005. She has coached woodwinds for the Maryland Classic Youth Orchestra's Young Artists Orchestra and the All-County Junior and Senior Bands. Ms. Mathis grew up in Silver Spring, MD, and is a product of Montgomery County Public Schools. She graduated from B-CC High School and received a BA in Music from Indiana University. She earned teaching credentials at the University of MD, and Trinity College and received a Professional Teaching Standards Certificate from George Washington University. In 2007 Ms. Mathis earned National Board Certification. Ms. Mathis's main instrument is flute. She played flute and tenor and alto saxophones for 20 years with the swing, jump blues, boogie woogie band Sassparilla, and is featured on their CD, Cool and Collected. She has also played flute and piccolo with the woodwind quintet, And Horn Makes Five, as well as innumerable freelance performances in the Washington, DC area. In recent years Ms. Mathis has undertaken serious study of cello and attends the annual week-long summer workshop, Cellospeak. She is a member of Maryland Music Educators Association, American String Teachers Association and Music Educators National Conference. Outside of school Ms. Mathis enjoys spending time with her family, taking long walks with their dog Petey in Rock Creek Park and riding her bicycle. Her favorite rides are around Poolesville, MD, along the rolling hills of northwestern Montgomery County.
