Classroom News

You will find classroom news updated as we change units in 5th grade. Please check back periodically to find out what's happening inside in your child's classrooms. We will send home emails if there is extremely important information that you might otherwise miss.
Language Arts: The students are just wrapping up our study of Roald Dahl. We have enjoyed sharing our learning through our class Wiki found at: http://bretonfantasyland.wikispaces.com/. Check out the hard work each group did and the amazing learning happening in and out of our classroom!
Our final unit of study will be diversity. Each student will be enjoying an independent book and completing projects to end our year of literacy.
Social Studies with Mrs. Rettig:
In chapter 11 historians will be learning about six prominent colonists, who are either Loyalists or Patriots, and record these leaders’ viewpoints about American independence. Historians will examine the role of government in their lives and identify Patriot and Loyalist views about Great Britain’s rule of the colonies. Historians will then take on the role of these six historical figures in a panel debate between Loyalists and Patriots.
Science with Mrs. Gast:
To end our school year we will be studying body systems. Students will learn the basic functions of skeletal, muscular, digestive, respiratory, circulatory and reproductive systems.
The reproductive health unit will begin by showing students the DVD, "Just Around the Corner for Boys/Girls." Students will be separated by gender for these films. The remainder of the unit will be taught together in science class. Please look for your child's reproductive packet to come home. This handout opens the door for discussion with your child.
Math with Mrs. Marlow:
The end is near! We have two units we will complete before the end of they year. We are currently studying geometry where we are measuring angles, finding unknown angles in given shapes and figures, and learning about polygons.
Our final unit will be area and perimeter. This is a fun, interactive unit and a great way to end our year of math!
