October 13, 2009: Cougars push Gators to the brink; come up short The Cougar volleyball team was involved in if not the best, definitely the most exciting match of the season thus far. The Cougars fought the visiting Gators in front of a raucous home crowd before getting edged by the Gators, 25-18, 22-25, 25-9, 25-27, 15-13 on Tuesday. Kuulei Piena put away 18 kills and Kristen Herlosky contributed 16 kills to pace the Cougars in this tough league match. After letting a close game 1 slip away, the Cougars re-grouped and took game 2 off of the Gators. Unshaken, the Gators took advantage of early errors and completly dominated game 3, winning the game 25-9. When it seemed like all momentum was lost and the Gators might roll to an easy victory, the Cougars came back in dramatic fashion to take game 4 behind dominant performances by middle blockers Ally Keller and Tiana Tuamoheloa. Both kept the hopes of the Cougars alive with blocks at key moments against Green Valley's All-League hitter, Siga Appelgate. The excitement continued into the 5th and deciding game as Green Valley appeared to take control early on, but the Cougars fought back from a 6-3 deficit to tie the game at 8-8. From that point on the scoring went back and forth with long rallies and great defense, but at 13-13 Green Valley made two great plays to end the match. The Cougars travel to Foothill on Thursday. Next home match is October 26th vs. SECTA. Senior Night and "Pack the House" Night are scheduled for Wednesday, October 28th.
