Our 3rd Grade Curriculum

Here are just some of the concepts your child will learn while in 3rd grade.  All academic subjects are supported with Open Circle-social studies curriculum, and Brain Gym to help students focus, relax, and concentrate on learning. 

In mathematics the children will...

  • Master basic addition, subtraction, and multiplication facts.
  • Relate basic multiplication facts to division.
  • Compare and order numbers up to 9,999.
  • Add and subtract multi-digit numbers. 
  • Use various methods and models to multiply multi-digit numbers.
  • Estimate and round numbers.
  • Identify and represent fractions and decimals as part of whole units and groups. 
  • Identify, describe, and draw angles.
  • Learn about both 2D and 3D shapes.
  • Figure out the perimeter and area of objects and shapes.
  • Understand both U.S. customary and metric units of measurement.
  • strengthen time telling skills to tell time to the minute on analog and digital clocks.
  • Measure in both inches and centimeters and measure length to the nearest 1/4 in. and 1/2 cm.
  • Solve addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division number stories. 
  • Continue to strengthen their ability to add and subtract money. 
  • Collect, organize, and interpret data using various tables, graphs, and charts.
  • Recognize and extend geometric and number patterns.

In reading and literature the children will...

  • Read a variety of literature including fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and biographies.
  • Choose books at their own independent reading levels. 
  • Understand the author's purpose for writing text.
  • Read and discuss literature as a whole class and with a small group.
  • Read independently and respond to literature through writing. 
  • Identify and use text features like the table of contents, glossary, captions, and illustrations.
  • Learn about the plot and explore character development in stories.
  • Find the main idea and details in text.
  • Compare and contrast types of literature, themes, and characters.
  • Identify situations of cause and effect, and distinguish fact from opinion.
  • Use context clues to find the meaning of unknown words. 
  • Learn to alphabetize words.
  • Look for rhyming words and words with the same beginning sounds (alliteration).
  • Break down words by beginning, middle, and end sounds, as well as root words, prefixes, and suffixes.
  • Use reference sources such as dictionaries, encyclopedias, thesauruses, and atlases. 
  • Analyze literature, summarize, and provide evidence from the text to support their understanding. 

In writing and language the children will...

  • Write in a variety of different formats such as:  friendly letters, how-to paragraphs, summaries, expository paragraphs, poetry, stories, and personal narratives.
  • Learn to write a solid 7-10 sentence paragraph with a main idea, details and concluding sentence. 
  • Learn to write 3 paragraphs with a clear focus, coherent organization, and sufficient detail.
  • Learn to add relevant details, and vivid language to their writing. 
  • Use the proper punctuation an capitalization while writing.
  • Master the different types of sentences.
  • Learn about nouns including possessive nouns, singular and plural nouns ,and pronouns.
  • Learn about adjectives and articles.
  • Learn about verbs including action verbs, the verb be and helping verbs. 

In science the children will....

  • Learn about rocks and minerals and their different properties.
  • Learn about the properties of water and the water cycle.
  • Learn about plants and their life cycle. 

In social studies the children will...

  • Identify and use the important parts of a map including the compass rose, map key, coordinate grid, and scale.
  • Learn about the history and lifestyle of Wampanoag people and the Pilgrims.
  • Learn about the Puritans and  colonial life.
  • Learn about the American Revolution and the famous Americans who lived during that time.
  • Learn about the state of Massachusetts and their hometown of Scituate.
