Marin Rose was born January 19th at 4:08 a.m. (right on time). She weighed 9lbs. and 4oz. and was 20” long. We are anxiously awaiting pictures and more news from Mrs. Day to hear how things are going. Warm wishes to Mrs. Day and her family. J Language Arts: Last week we started all new reading groups based on their reading levels. Students really seem to be enjoying their books thus far. As always, please make sure to make reading a top priority at home too and an enjoyable, nightly habit as much as possible. Reading aloud to a parent or sibling is great practice as well, especially if it is someone who can assist in checking for comprehension and helping the second grader dig a little deeper and even analyze and critique the story. We are continually working on reaching for the higher-level thinking and understanding! In writing, students recently completed their snow day stories and look great hanging in the hallway with the snow globes they made as well. They were all so creative! We are now working on a “How to” writing piece. Our focus is to use sequential and good descriptive words. Once everyone has finished, students will basically know how to do anything and everything. J Starting in February we will be introducing and writing personal correspondence. I would like to have the students write Valentines to seniors at a Senior Center if possible. If any of you have a particular place in mind, please feel free to e-mail me with your ideas.
Science / Social Studies: We are now working on mapping, which we are almost finished with already! I have seen many maps of bedrooms already and they look fantastic! There are quite a few artists in this class. Our test for the mapping unit will be Friday, February 3rd. Students will need to sketch a map of the playground, read a map key, and give directions on a map. I am sending home a blank map and directions today for some extra practice. This does not need to be turned in, it is simply to help the kids study. You can also have your child make a map of your house or your neighborhood for practice as well. Rules/laws and Core Democratic Values are our next unit of study in Social Studies. Math: It is time for telling time.J We have been learning time to the hour, half hour, quarter hour, and minute, as well as elapsed time. We have also been focusing on using special terms like “quarter to,” “quarter after,” and “half past.” So next time you and your child are around a clock, ask them what the time is. Practice makes perfect. J I am also sending home a study guide for our test on time today which will be Friday February 3rd as well. Our next unit will be data and probability. Other: Thank you to all of you for such a warm welcoming! I had the opportunity to work with Mrs. Day for a couple weeks before she left so I know how great she is. I am doing my VERY best to try and fill her shoes. The students are absolutely wonderful and have made this such an easy transition for me. I am looking forward to meeting all of you soon!
Enjoy your long weekend!
