What is the Carnegie Program?

The Carnegie program was developed at Carnegie Mellon University as the result of over 20 years of research.  The Cognitive Tutor® integrates advanced cognitive research, interactive software sessions and engaging classroom lessons to immerse students in the experience of mathematics.  The philosophy of this program is “Learning by Doing.”  For more information and testimonials, log on to http://www.carnegielearning.com

Why do we use a computer?

The computer allows students to practice the skills we use in the class.  The software keeps track of the progress of each student.  Students move at their own pace through the computer units, however there are minimum targets set every four weeks or so.  If a student hasn't reached the target point in the Cognitive Tutor they will be bumped up to the next unit and receive a 0 for each section not completed up to the target point.  If a student feels they need more time on the computer, they can talk to their teacher about staying after school to work on the computer.  (You cannot access the Cognitive Tutor at home).

Computer Use Policy
The computer laptops used in this program are expensive.  Students should treat the equipment with the utmost care.

The use of computers in the Carnegie classroom is restricted to the Carnegie Learning Program.  Internet use is strictly prohibited.  The first time a student is in violation of this policy, the student will not be allowed to use the computer for two days.  For a second offense, students will be referred to the Assistance Principal for more serious disciplinary action and will not be allowed on the computer for five days.  A third offense will result in a referral to the Assistant Principal and the termination of computer use for the rest of the course.  Students suspended from the computer will have to complete worksheets to replace the computer practice.

Computer Grades

Students receive one formative grade and one summative grade for each computer unit.
